Maytag Side by Side Defrost Board
Maytag side by side refrigerator(model#MSD2456DEW): Not cooling properly. I took all the food out of the freezer, then took off the panel back inside the freezer and found the evaporator coils all frosted up heavily. I ohmed out the defrost heater and defrost thermostat(while frosty) for continuity, both checked out good. So with both parts testing good, then the only part left is the defrost board. I changed it, worked great.
Its very important not to start defrosting the evaporator coil till you finish ohming out the defrost thermostat part for continuity.
Here's the defrost board for this model - Part#61005988

Whirlpool Refrigerator Condenser Fan
Whirlpool Refrigerator (Model#ED25SMXRWR0): Not cooling well in both the refrigerator and freezer sections. Hot in between the doors on the cabinet middle frame.
Pulled the refrigerator out from the wall, then took off the lower back access cover to find that the condenser fan motor had stopped and wasn't blowing air to keep the condenser cool, thus it was overheating the compressor and shutting it down on the compressor overload device.
Here's the condenser fan motor for this model:

GE Refrigerator Door Gasket
1992 GE Refrigerator - Freezer on Top (Model#TBX18JPARWH): The refrigerator door gasket was was torn and ripped at the bottom of the door, just due to wearing out over the years.
I installed a new refrigerator door gasket.
Make sure if you install any refrigerator door gasket to either let it soak in a bathtub with warm to hot water or use a heat gun or hair dryer to soften it up so it seals properly when its installed.

How to replace a (Whirlpool/Kenmore Model 106) Refrigerator Start Relay
The example shown here is done on a side-by-side whirlpool refrigerator.
Many of the start relays
are the same on other makes and models even though they may look a little different.
Customer Complaint:
My refrigerator is to warm and I can hear a clicking noise.
My refrigerator is not cooling at all but it sounds like it is running.
Often times the customer will hear just the fans running and think the refrigerator is running, but the compressor is not running because the start relay it bad and needs to be replaced.
To replace the start relay you will need to unplug the refrigerator at the outlet.
Pull the refrigerator away from the wall so you can remove the lower back cover.
Once you have the back cover removed you will be able to see the compressor.
The start relay will be located on the side of the compressor. The start relay shown on this side by side whirlpool refrigerator is white and has a white and red wire going to it.
Remove the old start relay by pulling it off by hand. If it does not pull of by hand easily you may have to put the tip of a flat blade screw driver between the start relay and the body of the compressor to help pry it off. Most of the time you can remove them without any force.
Shake the relay, if it rattles, then its definitely bad.
Here is the part to order:

GE Refrigerator Defrost Problem in the Freezer
GE Refrigerator (Model#GSS22KGMB)
Here is a basic photo of a evaporator coil with massive frost build-up, but what part has failed?

Good Question, The first thing you do is move the defrost timer into defrost, if the defrost heater does not come on, then you know for sure that's its either a bad heater or defrost thermostat. You would need to get a ohm meter to check the heater for continuity.
(With power off-refrigerator unplugged) the resistance of the heating element - it should measure
under 100 ohms (31 ohms typical). If it reads this then the heater is good. If not, you would need to replace the heater assembly.

Ice Maker Water Inlet Valve
1999 Sears Kenmore Side by Side (Model#106.58582892)(Made by Whirlpool):
The ice maker had stopped making ice, but the water dispenser in the front was working fine. I ohmed out the ice maker solenoid on the water inlet valve, and it showed continuity, then i took off the electrical connector to the ice maker side of the water inlet valve solenoid and put my volt meter leads in it, and then cycled the ice maker. When the ice maker called for water, my volt meter went to 120 volts, so that told me that even though the solenoid showed it had continuity, it was still bad, it was just stuck closed.
I replaced the water inlet valve assembly and it worked good.

GE Motherboard
2003 GE Side by Side Refrigerator (model#GSS25JEPABB): The main control board (aka the motherboard) has a great deal of functionality to it. Its the brain that controls the refrigerator fan motors, defrost cycle, temperature, sensors. I have seen these boards go bad mainly when it has defrost system problems or cooling problems.
The board is located on the very back outside wall of the refrigerator that has a metal shield thats covers it. Its easy to change out, just make sure the refrigerator is unplugged first. The connectors are the same, just unsnap the ones from the old board, making sure you either memorize where they go or writing it down on some paper, then install the new board and reconnect the wire connectors.

Testing a refrigerator inlet water valve
Here is a good question that was posted in our Forums
I have a 1996 Whirlpool model # ET22DQLDW01. It has an ice/water dispenser on the front door. The water dispenser has suddenly quit operating. I can hear a hum when I press in on the dispenser lever, but not even the slightest drip of water. It appears that the ice maker is still operating ok.
I posted the easy way to test it:
Sounds like the inlet water valve went out. Its in the back of the refrigerator where your water supply line hooks-up to it.
If you wanted to do-it-yourself you could un-mount it and take off the larger of the 2 plastic water lines and get a small bucket, and have someone press the dispenser, if nothing comes out, then its your inlet water valve for sure.
Here is the water valve for your model:

Sears Kenmore 596 Model Defrost Thermostat
Sears Kenmore Side by Side Refrigerator made by Amana (model#596.9550850): Not cooling well in both the refrigerator and freezer sections, and some stuff in the bottom of the refrigerator section was freezing.
The defrost thermostat(bi-metal) runs the evaporator fan motor, also called the freezer fan, and controls the defrost heater. You can Ohm it for continuity while the evaporator coil is still frosted up, always unplug the refrigerator before Ohming it out.

Hot in between the refrigerator doors
Hi all,
Maytag Wide-By-Side

This Maytag has a self-cleaning condenser coil. :)
On other brands of refrigerators:
First thing, clean the condenser coil either underneath or in back of the unit.
Could be something is stuck in the condenser fan motor, or the condenser motor has gone out.
Take off the access cover in the back, and look to see if the condenser fan blade is turning while the compressor is running.
If its not, get a flashlight and look for something stuck in the fan blade, unplug the unit first.
Then try to manually turn the fan blade, if it doesnt turn well, could be motor bearing is out.
You would need a new condenser motor.
That fan motor keeps the condenser coil cool, and part of that coil goes right in the middle of the 2 doors to prevent condensation in humid weather.(Yoder loop)
If that fan is not turning, it will get super hot in between the doors.
Happy Labor Day!
South Willamette Valley, Oregon forcast:
Tonight. Mostly clear. Lows around 50. North wind to 10 mph becoming light.
Tuesday. Mostly sunny. Patchy fog in the morning. Highs in the lower 80s. Light wind becoming north 10 mph in the afternoon.

Water to Refrigerator
Hi all,
Remember: You should change the water filter at least once a year. If the filter is old and clogged it will cause water pressure and ice maker problems too. :)
If your water pressure seems low, or the ice maker is making hollow cubes, check this first:
The best way to check is pull out the refrig. turn off your water supply to the refrig. Take of the water line going to the refrig. water valve.
Get something to catch water in, like a small bucket or container, put the water line in that, then turn the water on.
If you get a good stream and good water pressure then its in the refrig. water valve or ice maker.
Lots of times i see low water pressure because people install those self piercing needle valves to the cold water line under the sink. Those clog up alot, because the hole that supplies water is so small.
Have a Good Day!

Fair Tuesday
The Lane County Fair opened today , it goes everyday till Sunday. A friend went with me, Very Sunny day, great fair weather!
If your Ice maker quits making ice, the first thing to check for is water to Ice Maker.
Just take the water line off the back of the Refrig. and get something to catch the water in, then turn on the water to make sure you get a good steady stream, if not, your water supply will need to be fixed to allow proper water pressure.
Thats a tip for today, Any questions or comments welcome. :)

Refrigerators
Refrigerators are working overtime in the Hot Summer.
Tips to help:
Keep the Condenser Clean.
Make sure the Gaskets are in good shape, no rips or tears.
If the Refrig. does not cool properly:
Check for thick frost on back wall of freezer or on bottom of freezer.
If there is, Your Defrost Heater is not coming on.
If you call a Appliance Repair Tech. Please leave the unit running and on. The biggest mistake people make is turning the Refrig. off or unplugging it. The Tech can test it better with it on, even with frost.
Thanks about all for today. :)
