I have a Whirlpool side by side purchased 6-27-2003. It looks exactly like figure 1 in the Safety Comission recall for Maytag.
http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml09/09145.html
My Whirlpool(Model SP2032229) has experienced the same start relay problem. The start relay burnt all the pins off the compressor, the relay itself disintegrated, wires are burnt and the Linoleum Floor is burnt black, it used to be a light shade of yellow! From what I can tell, both Maytag and whirlpool use similar start relays and compressors. Good thing I unplugged it before the floor ignited! Has anyone else out there experienced this?
I plan to file a complaint with the Product Safety Commission.

I think that I am having a similar problem. Last night I tried doing a load and was shot an F3 error code on my Kenmore Elite series. I canceled that load, tried restarting it and was shot a F4 code, again canceled and tried once more with no codes. I came back to find the washer filled with water and doing nothing. It looked like it made it through wash cycle but not quite to the stage that it adds the softener. I tried setting to the drain/ rinse setting and nothing happened. From looking up the error codes it F3 is Lid switch failure and F4 is recirculation switch failure. But the more reading I have done it sound like the Lid Switch, but knowing nothing of washing machines i'm not quite sure. Also is there an easier way of draining the washer other than scooping it out by hand?

To me it is not worth the time. I would just replace the whole tub and avoid the hassle.

I just replaced one of these a few weeks ago. I guess it is a common malfunction for this model.
