Default Amana lea30aw dryer tripping breaker

My Amana is about 8 years old. It's the one Amana appliance I haven't had much trouble with (until now). I couldn't get it to start. What I found out was it was tripping one side of the double pole breaker. The side that sent power to the timer and the door switch.

I finally got it to start by taking everything out, setting it to no heat (not sure if this mattered or not) and leaving the door open while I plugged it in. Most of the time as soon as I try and start it it trips this breaker (one side only). Once I got it to run on several cycles, starting and stopping. I put clothes in and it ran as well. With heat and without. Then as I was winding the knob to a different cycle I heard a pop and the breaker tripped, both sides this time. There was a burning smell. I'm pretty sure the pop came from the main timer switch.

Obviously a short is causing the breaker tripping. Do you think it's the main timer assembly or something else? It's like it's just barely tripping the breaker because it doesn't look tripped, and the other pole is still providing power. Except for the pop, it tripped it very definately.

The drum spins freely by hand. It seemed to be heating ok when it was running. Sometimes it will start to spin the drum a bit and trip, other times (most of the time) it makes no sound or movement and trips it.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Greg
