Its possibly your water pump making the noise and leaking.

Did you remove the lower access panel#16 here:

Is there any way to test the pump to see if it the culprit? Or do you just have to replace parts til the problem goes away?

Yes, you can remove the water pump, it mounts with 3 screws under the motor, but you need to remove the motor assembly first.

I removed the motor and pump. Is there a way to determine if the pump is the culprit? Should the pump spin freely, or should there be some resistance?

The belt looks okay. Not shredded or burnt.

If you can get a flashlight and look inside the pump for foreign objects, then turn the impeller thats inside it by turning the plastic piece were the motor shaft connects to it, It should turn freely.

I reassembled the motor and belt without the pump. I ran a spin cycle and it is still very loud. I guess that means the transmission, or a bearing, or the motor. I guess I'll try running without the belt to eliminate (or implicate) the motor.

Yes, try running the motor alone without the belt on it.

I removed the belt and ran a spin cycle and the loud growl went away. Now what?

Transmission? New washer?

Any thoughts on putting it back together and running it the way it is until I decide what to do. I understand there is a risk of it leaking again.

On the topic of leaks...is it uncommon for a washer to leak intermittently? We ran a couple loads after the small leak and don't think it leaked.

After looking through the archives, I found a post that had similar symptoms. It turned out that the hub (or tub) seal and bearing kit solved the problem. It sounds like a moderately difficult repair job, but I'm up for it.
