This 1997 fullsize upright freezer froze up a few weeks ago and I lost some food. It had ice around the evaporator and after it thawed there were a few small pieces of glass that I presume came off of the heater wire?
I've always had to take it apart and defrost the evaporator about once a year. It always appeared the drain hose froze right where it comes out of the freezer cabinet (below the evaporator). It now works but on max it only gets to about 27 degrees. Any thoughts and how hard would this be to fix? |

Yes, you would need a new defrost heater Manufacturer's Number: 8201747 , but what concerns me now is that it won't cool properly now, normal freezer temp on all freezers is 0-20 degrees.
So if its only getting to 27 now, that tells me that your compressor is shot now, if your evaporator coils don't have excessive frost build-up on them now. If you look at your evaporator coils now, do you see a thin layer of frost on ALL of them? Jake

I defrosted the unit about 2 weeks ago.
Yes the evaporator coils are completely frosted over again. There is even a frost layer on the front of the door that covers the evaporator. |

Ok, if they are completely frosted over again, then new defrost heater should fix it, you can order it from the link I posted to it above.
