Default Amana gas dryer - not heating properly

I have an amana gas dryer Model ALG643RBW with the following "symptoms"

1. The timer will only advance on the timed dry setting and not on the perm press, automatic or other settings.

2. On the timed dry setting I took off the front cover and watched the element heat and ignite at least 4 times but after a period of time it stops doing this. It will only heat for about 15 minutes. Then it will advance to the end of the cycle without heating again. It will also heat on the perm press and automatic setting but only for a short time and it never advances.

3. After it has been tumbling for a while it goes through a period where it sounds rough or gravely. This seems to be indepent of the heating cycle and may be a totally different issue.

Any help I can get would be greatly apprciated.

Hi,

1 of 2 things may be happening, either the flame is going out due to the high-limit thermostat shutting it down prematurely or your gas coils are bad.

First, pull your dryer away from the wall, then take the exhaust hose off and just start an empty load and let the air blow into your laundry room and see if the flame stays on, if it does, that means you have a exhaust vent restriction to the outside of your house.

If the flame still doesn't stay on then your gas coils are bad.

Here's the gas coil kit for your model:
Manufacturer part number 279834 is RepairClinic item number 3479
279834

Let us know what you find.

Thanks Jake, I'll give that a try. I really appreciate the help. And thanks for the link to the proper coils.
