Refrigerator and Freezer no longer cooling
Brand:
Amana
Age:
6-10 years
As the title implies, the refrigerator and freezer quit cooling yesterday. We had the control board replaced about 4 months ago when the same symptoms occurred. We have a maintenance warranty, but I can't get anyone out for 2 weeks, so I'm trying to figure this out myself. I've downloaded a service manual for the unit, but don't understand how to "test the control board." The manual makes several references to do so, but when you get to the section about running tests, they show you how to check defrost operation, evaporator/freezer fan test, etc, but nowhere do I see indications of how to see if the control board is good or bad. Am I overlooking something?
Thanks in advance

Ok, lets go through the basics, Do you hear the freezer fan running when you open the freezer door?
Pull the refrigerator out from the wall then remove the lower back access panel, do you see the fan running next to the compressor(big black dome)? Put your hand on the top of the compressor, is it warm and vibrating?
If both fans are running then you would need to chack the compressor start relay first. If one or no fans are running, then its likely the control board.
Here's the main control board(JAZZ) for your model:

Jake,
Thanks for the response. Yes, the freezer fan runs when the freezer drawer is opened. The fan next to the compressor runs also, I did check that when I verified the coils were clear. I did not put my hand on the compressor to see if it was warm or not. What is the best way to check the compressor start relay?
Thanks for your help,
Jimmy

Ok Jimmy,
Just unplug your refrigerator and take off the compressor start relay and shake it, if it rattles inside its bad.
If no rattle, then use an ohm meter to check it for continuity, normal would be 0-1 ohm.
Compressor start relay device assembly here for your model you can order here:

Jake,
Thanks again. It failed the rattle test so I have ordered one. As an aside, I had asked about testing the control card, not because I suspected it to be bad, I just wanted to know what the symptoms of a failed card are or how to check. Is there a simple way?

Nope, there is no way to test that control board Jimmy, so thats why we test the compressor start relay device first.
