Default Amana ALW432 dead after 3 years

Hope someone can point me in the right directions in diagnosing this washer. History: 6 month after purchasing new the washer seemed to get a bit noisy in the agitate cycle, seemed to wash ok so I thought it was normal- fast forward to a few months ago- washer making more noises, now also in spin. Started leaking out the bottom when running. Last load the belt burned up and broke when going into the spin cycle. I now have the washer completely disassembled and have found the following.
Both main bearings are in nice shape. Turning the transmission input shaft seems smooth, no rough spots or anything unusual. The tranny input shaft does have a fair amount of vertical play- a good 1/4". The brake assembly did not seem to release the first few times I manually actuated it, then it seemed to break loose and work, I suspect this is why the belt burned up. Motor/pulleys/idler seem to be fine. I have not found signs of where the leak was but suspect the tub seal since there was a fair amount of sand in the bottom of the tub. Generally everthing looks to be in great shape as they should be with this new of washer. any ideas?

thanks, Tim

Hi,

Yes, this was kinda common, tub seal leak, and the brake pads sticking.

The transmission on these would give out alot too, I wouldn't be surprised if yours was starting to go bad. It has a 5 yr. warranty on it.

I would replace the break pads as well.

This link may help as well:

Buying the service manual on this might not be a bad idea as well:

thanks for the reply. How can I tell the condition of the transmission?
It does not readly come apart. I assume the warranty on the tranny is only good if all the work is performed at an authorized repair center? The labor would make it not worth repairing I'm afraid.

thanks again, Tim

Yes, the warranty on the transmission is only good if the authorized repair shop does it unfortunately.

If the transmission pulley turns good both ways, then it should be ok.
