Hi aaastan,

Good to meet you, thanks for helping with your appliance repair knowledge on the boards, I value all the appliance techs we have here!

If we all didn't live so far apart, i would love to treatall the appliance techs here to hot coffee and donuts at the local donut shop!:D

That was my favorite part of working at Montgomery Ward, every Friday all us 5 appliance techs would meet, FOR OUR MORNING BREAK, at the Donut Wheel in Tucson, Arizona for lots laughs and fun stories about our fun customers, routes and the appliances that we did on a daily basis!

Jake,

I should be thanking you--I'm happy someone had the idea of starting a forum relating to appliances. It is fun--and I get a kick out of helping others.

Our business is a family affair. My father and I have been working together since 1979 as moving company(too demanding on the body).Since 1982 we started the appliance repair business and never looked back.My wife and mother run the office and phones and I cannot overstate how hard they work. As well as being the first *contact* with new customers who callthat need a knowledgeable and sympathetic person who can help the customerover the phone.

What's amazing is just *how deep* we're into it. My wife's sister-in-law was a Sears service woman in Delaware and became the "service manager" of a pretty sizeable shop. It is through her thatI learned how guys like you work your tail off with a schedule thatsounds monstrous compared to ours--we do 4-6 calls per day on average(more during summer months). Sears techs around here are running full tilt doing some 12-17 calls a day! My sister and her husband and their son have an appliance business in Ocean City,Maryland. My oldest brother does as well in southeastern Pennsylvannia. I love my job. Learned a lot about people as well as appliances--most folks are decent and grateful to know someone who actually can repair things:).

Good Job setting up the forum!

John

Thanks John,

Sounds like your family is well into appliances and appliance repair.

I live here in Lane County, Oregon, its about 300,000 population. It covers the cities of Eugene(139,000) and Springfield(52,000) Oregon, the rest of the people are in the county limits. We have to cover a large area, so we go out with about 7-10 calls a day, with mileage averaging 50-100 miles a day.

Buti know like you say, in big cities, techs that dont have much mileageto cover can do 12-17 calls a day.

Hello, I'm a new member, but thought I would chip in as I've done commercial laundry (coin-op and some heavy duty) and been a technician for the better part of the last 5 years. (Interspersed with some construction sidework and remodeling) :)

I'm heading to Sears office in Columbus OH in a few hours for a job interview for service tech. I hear they treat their people remarkably well, so wish me luck :D

Kevin,

Good luck in Ohio.

I used to take my wife and kids to Slanesville, W.VA every October in a motor home to visit good friends before they moved to Winchester, VA. Met all the neighbors--nearest one lives some two miles away:D. Good people.

Not sure where you are located but Slanesville is beautiful country.

Hi Kevin,

Hope the job interview at Sears worked out good, I been with Sears ever since Montgomery Ward went bankrupt in March 2001. They actually came to our shop just before we closed and offered all the Wards techs. a job as Sears Techs.

They have treated me very well, great management, our manager is a great person to work with.

Hope it works out for you.

Update: They compressed the interview process into 2 interviews, the drug screening ( which I passed) and the background check release. I called to thank them for their time, and they said they would be calling me back with a start date after the background check. <keeps fingers crossed>

They said it would normally have been 3 separate processes - 2 interviews with managers, drug test and background check screening - so multiple trips would've been a bad thing.

Just a note though - Got the job :) <jumps up and down like an idiot>

I'm still young enough to be tickled to death over a good company to work for.

Hiya!
I have worked in television for 13 years, and switch/direct newscasts every day...along with duties in middle management. My hobbies pretty much center around my wife and kids....going to their games, helping with fundraisers, etc. When I can, I do stagehand work for traveling shows that pass through town (Cats, 42nd Street, that kind of thing). My time recently has been spent posting and checking this forum so that I can fix some appliances that have all decided to stop working at the same time.
I really appreciate the advice I have gotten....I enjoy learning about, and fixing the problems that I feel comfortable with. Gotta go...TV is calling!

As a new member I'll ring it...

Retired from the Navy (30) years.. 12 years ago... since have been into construction and some home repair work.. Things get slow in the winter here in Ohio so during the worst of it I work in military surplus purchase and sales..

Got this bad habit however with the internet and forums... but, really enjoy trying to fix my own problems or talk with others who can help and who have some super knowledge like found on this forum. Glad I'm not alone when it comes to consumers who are just....so.... confused!

Yes, me too, I'm addicted to the internet and forums!:3:

Its really good to help and communicate with others, and to get help on stuff you own.:D

I went to a Dodge forum in 2001 when the local Dodge dealer didn't have a clue of what the problem with my car was. I did a forum search and found someone with the exact same problem and i fixed it myself, it was the oxygen sensor.:)

Thanks guys for helping us here! Wish we could throw a yearly party to show our gratitude, but were all pretty far from each other. Actually JM and Bam live in the same state though.

When I worked at Montgomery Wards in Tucson, AZ. we had 3 techs that played instruments, 2 on guitar, 1 on bass, the drummer was another guy though.
They sounded really good when they played together, we even had after work parties on special holidays and they played at all of them.

In my spare time i read whatever i can get my hands on and hang around with a bunch of bikes and their bikers ;)

Apart from that i love cooking, the more people i'm cooking for the better. :D Took an interest in this site cause the other half is useless for repairs - to anything so i'm the one he calls when stuff doesnt work in the house - like the toilet.

There are so many cool people on this forum that i wish i could meet you guys, but unfortunately that's out of the question:(

Thanks for the advice

Man, that looks like it's so much fun ;)

It's just that i happen to live on the tip of africa and am highly unlikely to make it to the states any time soon - even if my boss lives there. Although if any of you stay in the uk then i could meet up there some time - since i'll probably be moving there sometime soon.

Do you guys ever get together in the States? My biggest problem with forums where i get to know people is that i never meet the people i talk to which sucks - big time

Jake
April 20th, 2006, 06:18 PM
Must be exciting to live on the tip of Africa! We don't get many members from outside of North America here, but I have noticed we are starting to get alot of members here from the UK.:) But the UK appliances are quite different than the American appliances.

Actually we have had this forum and blog since Aug. 2004 and I have never once meet any members from here, but it would be exciting if I ever could. Maybe other members that live closer have met that I'm not aware of.

I wish i could say that it was amazing and exciting and all those cool things, but it really isnt. The place i live - Cape Town - is as beautiful as it gets, but there is too much other stuff happening down here for the beauty to compensate for it any more. Great for a visit, but not much more although i'll miss the sunshine when i'm gone.

Soon i will also be a member from the uk since i'm moving to the uk soon, maybe i'll meet up with some of the members over there. I would imagine that the appliances on each continent differ quite greatly from one to the other - i guess thats a problem particularly in a forum like this where you deal with different types from all over.

Why dont you put up a discussion board about where everyone comes from to partner up with this discussion - it could lead to people actually meeting people who live near them :)

By the way, I lived in Tucson, AZ. for 6 years, worked for Montgomery Ward Service Dept.(Doctronics/Electric Avenue) from 1993-1999, when worked slowed down in Tucson, they would send me up to Mesa, Temple, Chandler, Gilbert to run service calls. I remember a appliance parts store called Abco back then, but I think they changed there name to Appliance Part Depot now in Mesa?
