The Frigidaire freezer I just bought (used) doesn't shut off, even when set at the lowest setting. The motor runs constantly. The door gasket is in good condition and doesn't appear to be leaking air into or out of the freezer. The temperature appears to stay below -15 degrees (as measured with an outdoor thermometer on a shelf). It was manufactured in 1993, is not a self-defrosting model, and generally appears to be in good condition. Is it normal to run constantly like this, or could there be a problem with a thermostat or some other component?

Depending on how you're measuring the temperature, you may be reading the temperature of the shelf itself. Raise any temperature probe of the thermometer off the shelf to gage the air temperature only.

The freezer should NOT run constantly (ie. 100% of the time). Once it has gotten down to proper temperature (like it sounds it may be), it should cycle on and off to maintain that temperature.
1. Are all the shelves frosting evenly and uniformly?
2. Is the control's capillary (sensor tube) still attached to one of the shelves?
If ALL the shelves ARE frosting uniformly and the thermostat's capillary tube IS properly attached to one of the shelves, I can only think the thermostat (see the following link) is defective and likely needs to be replaced.

Thank you for the information. We'll check the things you suggested. If we do need to replace the thermostat, is that something an ordinary, somewhat handy guy can replace, or do I need to call a repairman or technician? Do you know ifit come with instructionsfor installation?

Thermostats on refrigerators and freezers are not usually very difficult to replace. The knob just pushes on/pulls off, the control itself and the sensor bulb mounted with a couple of screws or pushes into place, the wiring has push-on connectors.

No, appliance parts do NOT usually come with installation instructions except in the odd case or very popular parts (yours isn't one) or when some sort of modifications to the appliance are required to install the replacement.
While not for your specific brand, the repair manual at the following link would likely be helpful for servicing it as most freezers are basically the same. Many of the basic instructions about refrigerators should be applicable to other brands as well.

Thought you'd like to know -- I put in a new thermostat (pretty easy) and that apparently was the problem. Thanks again.
