I have an Amana ALW880QAW that will not agitate. When you start the washer it will fill but then do nothing. If you advance the cycle, it will spin and drain.
If you unplug the washer for a while and then try it, it sounds as if it is trying to agitate and then it 'overloads'. The belt appears to be in good shape and doesn't appear to be binding.
Any suggestions? Thanks...

Hi,
It sounds like you may have something stuck in your water pump, or your transmission is locked-up. If you remove the lower front access panel, you will see your motor and your plastic pump right under the motor. Take the belt off from your motor pulley and from the transmission pulley, then turn your motor pulley both ways, it should turn freely, do the same for your transmission pulley.
Here is your motor:

Here is your water pump:

Well, it appears that the transmission is bound up. I removed the belt and the motor turned freely. I tried turning the large pully underneath, and it turns the drum in one direction but it will not turn the other.
I suppuse that the transmission is an expensive and difficult repair for the somewhat novice?

Yes, its very expensive, and its an all day job for someone who's never done one before, you would definitely need the repair manual to do it.
Now if your washer is under 5 yrs. old, your transmission is still under warranty for the part only, you would still need to pay labor. You would need to contact Amana (http://www.amana.com/amana/jsp/customer.do?cs=2&BV_UseBVCookie=No&BV_SessionID=@@@@1924771603.1165541830@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccceaddjhmkjmmicfjnceifdffldgfg.0&pagename=scheduleservice) to have a tech. come out for warranty service.
Whats the serial# of your washer?

I expected that much. I know it's about 5 years old, but not sure exactly when we purchased it.
The serial number is 11055518AA.
Any brand / model recommendations if I have to purchase a new washer?
Thank you for all your help.

Same problem with my Amana washer ALW880QAW
except I can turn both the motor pulley and trans pulley. When I turn it on it just buzzes. At one time I just moved the belt a few times and got it to work fine for 12 months or so. What could it be?

Its likely your motor is out completely now.
Here is a new motor for your model:
