View Full Version : Amana Oven Not Reaching Desired Temps

I have an Amana AGS761 gas range and have been having some difficulty reaching desired temperatures. I've had this oven for six years with no problems so this is definitely a new development.
I first noticed this on Christmas Day when the oven would not pass 275 degrees, even after an hour ++. Since then I've had similar intermittent problems of the same nature: oven either takes "forever" or never reaches the set temp. Other day it never passed 120 and we could easily smell gas. Could it be that there's an ignitor (it doesn't seem to have a pilot...looks like an electric ingition of some kind) is going bad? Or perhaps the "hood" covering the inside bottom of the oven is blocking the gas?
Tried it again today and now it's working fine again...I'm just expecting it to malfunction again or, heaven forbid, have some kind of gas incident. I'm okay with tinkering or replacing parts.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, its likely your oven igniter is on the verge of going out.

Here is a new one for your model you can order:

Thanks, Jake.

Is there a way to tell if the igniter is, indeed, the problem, and not the thermostat or safety valve? I read that the igniter should glow white or yellow...is it safe to remove the cover on the bottom of the oven to check the igniter visually?

Thanks again,

Jim
