I have an Amana LWA50AW that sometimes will not agitate. Everything works, spin, pumps, etc. During wash cycle you can hear the motor humming as if it is trying to agitate but does not have the strength to so so, the hum of a stuck DC motor. I've noticed that this usually occurs with full loads of heavier garments like jeans.

If I get in and move the clothes around and manually turn the agitator a bit, sometimes it will start moving again but sounds labored like it working hard to keep moving. Sometimes it will go for a bit and get stop again.

I havnt opened the machine yet, but I was hoping someone could give me some direction of what to look for. I dont think its the gear box since it will agitate sometimes and I plan on replacing the belt since Im sure it has never been serviced. Could this be a weak or dying motor or maybe a bearing lubrication issue?

Thanks in advance!

I find on these, that the belt starts cracking causing this condition. A new belt should do the trick.

Here is the parts diagram for your model, you can order the belt from here too from diagram#8:

Well, pulled the cover off today and the belt is almost completely shredded in the inside, big sections missing completely. Its a wonder it works at all from what I see! :)

Will order and replace the belt and let ya know the results.
Thanks a bunch!

Well, I replaced the belt today and the washer is agitating again! Thanks for the advise! That old belt was so completely destroyed that my wife was commenting that it didnt even look like the same belt as the replacement I ordered!

One further question though, during the agitation/wash cycle the inner basket is moving with the agitation in one direction (like a ratchet motion). Does this mean the brakes need to be replaced as well or is some movement of the inner basket normal during the wash cycle?

Thanks again!

No, on this model the inner tub shouldn't move, so it sounds like you would need the brake pads too.
