I see another entry with similar problem, yet my belt (in good shape) moves freely in the clockwise direction, yet will only travel a short distance in the counter clockwise direction and then stop. There was no information on the belt not freely moving in one of the directions and was wondering if you have any ideas.

Thank you!

Ah yes...another new-style GE with what sounds like a locked-up brake. Any signs of oil/water leakage inside the cabinet?

Thank you for the reply. There appears to be oil on the bottom from over time leakage....not a lot, yet there is evidence of oil, more like a slow leak. No evidence of water. Also, I wanted to clarify that the belt will allow it to move counter clockwise, just not freely as the clockwise motion (it needs to be pushed harder to make it go). I was playing with it more after I sent the first note.

PS~ How is sunny so cal....we left Simi Valley @ 12 years ago

I am having the same problem with this model washer. If it is a locked up brake, how would I go about fixing it?

Thanks,
Dan

If your washer is under 5 years old, then you have a part warranty on the transmission, which includes the brake assembly.

If its older than 5 yrs. you can purchase the transmission at the parts order page (http://www.applianceblog.com/parts) and install it yourself.

Here is a link that will help you install it:

Thanks Jake,

I actually had a repair guy out yesterday and found out that it is the curcuit board that is bad. Now it is just a debate as to whether or not to fix it or buy new, since the repair guy specializes in GE and told me what a poor product they make and that he does not recommend them to anyone. I guess GE is just counting on name recognition lasting forever instead of focusing on a quality product. It is pretty sad when this machine just turned 2 yrs old.

Check your owners guide, sometimes they give you a extended 2-5 warranty on certain electronic parts only.

Yea, I see electronic controlled washers fail alot, most all brands, I advice people to buy the extended warranty of at least 5 yrs. if you are going to purchase an electronic/computer controlled home appliance.
