When the washer has nothing in it, it will agitate, but when you put a load on it, even just water, or holding the agitator, it won't agitate and it there is a grinding noise somewhere.

Gears in gear box look okay, and there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the motor coupler.

We had an old motor that we took off this washer sometime back when we had another problem, (turned out it wasn't the motor)so I looked at it to compare it to the motor that is on the machine now. Current motor shaft moves in and out on the motor and is doesn't spin freely like one on the old motor.

Where should we start?

Check out the agitator itself. Could be loose or worn out on the splines on the transmission shaft, could be worn dogs/thrust washer.

That all fits together pretty snug, and there doesn't appear to be any wear.

My husband thinks it might be the splines on the shaft after all. When we had the gearboxopen, we could make the gears move and the shaft go back and forth, but when we held the shaft, we could still make the gears move and nothing happened with the shaft. Looks like the splines might be worn just enough to slip when there is a load and not grip in the agitate gear.

Thanks,

JP
