I have an Amana Commercial Quality Washer - Model LWA50AW. About a week ago, while doing a load of laundry, there was an AWFUL smell. My brother-in-law and hubby said it was the belt. SOOOOO.... they replaced the belt. Same smell ONLY NOW it won't agitate. My b-i-l says the brake is locked and will not disengage. Is this even POSSIBLE and if so, how do I tell him to fix this problem. We have two kids (one's a teenager) and four adults in this house so I do a LOT of laundry and am ALREADY tired of going to the mat to do it. And we are on a VERY fixed budget so telling me to go buy a new one is pretty much out of the question. Can someone PLEASE help me?????

It sounds like something is locked up. Tip your washer back and remove the belt. Turn the pump pulley and make sure it turnes free. Do the same to to the motor pulley. Use your hand to turn the transmission pulley both directions.( one direction is spin the other is agitate) If the brake is not releasing there is a kit you can purchase which comes with instructions for replacement.

I forgot to add that there is a possibility the transmission is bad. IF thats the case, start looking in the paper or local used appliance store for a replacement. I would strongly recomend Whirlpool or Kenmore.

All pulleys are turning freely, next step would be to get the kit, correct?

Does the inner tub turn when you turn your transmission pulley one way or the other?
