Dishwasher venting to disposal ?

I have acquired a used sink/disposal combo that I am installing in my kitchen. The sink has a vent mounted on its top surface that the dishwasher drain connects to, then subsequently dumps the water into the disposal unit.

Why the need for this venting system? It consumes the hole that I would think is there for my hand sprayer . Can I go directly from the dishwasher to the input to the disposal? That's what I did before (without a disposal).

Can I mount this vent thing below the sink somewhere, freeing up the hole to use for the sprayer?

Yes, you can, its funny you mentioned that, because today on my service call route, I had one do the same exact thing, the drain hose was going to the sink vent, and not draining properly, I put the drain hose directly to the disposal, It worked great!!!:D

That vent is not a drain vent. It is a code requirement (in some cities) to prevent city backflow into your dishwasher.

...say you put a load of dirty dishes into the dish washer and turn it on. You then leave the house to go eat. While you are gone, the city sewer backs up enough to flow water back up your pipes and into your house pipes.

Without the back flow preventer, the dirty water would backflow into your dishwasher, getting your clean dishes dirty, and you might not notice it upon returning.

With the open valve on top of your sink, it acts as a vacuum break, and the water flows onto your counter, and not into the dishwasher.
