I bought a Maytag MZD2766GEW used from a local furniture store. I really like the fridge and its perfect for my kitchen. I plugged it in today and the fridge doesnt come on. I tried moving temperature selector all the way over to coldest setting back and forth but it wont come on. The freezer works perfect though. About every 10 minutes, it makes a buzzing sound like its trying to start up but then quits after about 5-10seconds.

I am new to appliances but I am not scared to get in there and learn.

ALso I am going to swing by the place I bought it and see what they offer but for the short money I bought it for, I expect them to say return it and get a different one. I would like to spend some time diagnosing the issue with this one and see if its salvageable. I didnt check if it worked before I bought it. Stupid me. When I was transporting it, I layed it on its side and it stayed there for about 30minutes tops for the ride home. I let it stand upright in the house for about an hour before I plugged it in. I dont know if that matters.

36 hours ago, the fridge started clicking. It would click "on" for about 6 seconds (interior light would dim a bit) then it would click back "off". ...

36 hours ago, the fridge started clicking. It would click "on" for about 6 seconds (interior light would dim a bit) then it would click back "off". It would sit for about 80 seconds, then repeat. Continued to do it for about 36h during which time the fridge stopped cooling and everything started melting.

So I removed the back cover and found that the relay on the compressor was clicking. Pulled the relay out and separated the cover. Inside is a 2-pin "start" relay and a 1-pin "overload" if I understand correctly.

The overload looked fine, but the start was crumbled to bits (it rattled when I shook it before I took it apart)

I bought a new 'start' relay and put it in. No compressor action.

All of the lights are fine. Water dispenser buttons light up, interior bulb is on, etc.

I could swear that I saw the compressor fan running when the fridge was in "click mode" before I replaced the start relay. Now the compressor fan doesn't even run.

I tested the 3 compressor pins and got the following values. I don't know which pin is start and which is run, so I will use the following terms for the 3 pins:

PIN A - the one with the Overload on it
PIN B - one of the two connected to the start relay
PIN C - the other of the two start relay pins

Ohm readings:
A-B 3.4ohms
A-C 2.6ohms
B-C 5.6ohms

I read on this forum that the compressor is ok if 2 numbers add up to equal the 3rd one. 3.4+2.6=6.0 and I have 5.6 ohms on the 3rd set of pins.. so I assume this is OK?

Any idea what next steps I should go through? I plan to do the following:

1. Order a new overload (mine looks brand new, but perhaps something went wrong with it when the start relay burned up??). This will come in tomorrow morning and I will install & test and hope for the best!
2. Start fridge shopping. This fridge is 9yrs old so I'm not too interested in replacing the compressor at this point...

Any thoughts on other tests I can do (other than replacing the overload) before I scrap the fridge?

The most confusing thing is that from what I can tell, the compressor seems OK! And if the start and overload are fine, not sure what else to test???

Thanks!

Bought this fridge in 2001. Have replaced the evaporator board twice, the last time being 2 1/2 years ago. It's a big refrigerator, and the space was always close, but it slid out fine for last repair. Now, it's in that fire hazard recall. So I arranged a repair appointment. The repairman couldn't get the unit to budge, even with a helper. He said the insulation expands and contracts? I can't get it out either. Full wall on left, counter on right, cabinet close above, full wall behind. Unfortunately broke a whole in the wall behind it trying to lever it out - it's REALLY stuck. I've read online that the unit never works right again after the repair, and it's probably due for another evaporator board, plus a fire doesn't sound desirable. So I'm thinking of just junking it. But I still have to get it out. Currently, I have emptied it and turned it off, hoping something that was frozen will melt and contract. Any other suggestions or ideas? Especially Jake - you seem to really know these refrigerators! Thanks!

My fridge is a side by side and I came home to find my freezer is not freezing any longer. I pulled out the fridge and cleaned all of the dust and dirt out of the fan and cleaned around and plugged it back in and still no luck. I have it pulled away from the wall and every once in awhile I hear a clicking noise. Any suggestions?

We started having problems with the ice maker spitting out half-made ice cubes and having the "fingers" that push out the ice cubes get frozen in odd positions. The freezer itself stays plenty cold, so I don't think it was a temperature problem.

We had needed to change the water filter, since the water flow was really low, relative to what it should be, so I just removed the ice maker from the freezer, thinking that maybe the low water flow was contributing to the problem.

The ice maker came out really easily -- one screw and a molex-type 4-conductor plug. It sat in my cupboard for about 2 months.

So, we replaced the filter and I went ahead and reinstalled the ice maker over the weekend, and now it does absolutely nothing. I put the ice-sensing switch in the down position, but it never dispenses water or tries to eject the (nonexistent) ice cubes.

The water dispenser in the door dispenses water just fine. No complaints there -- the water flow is as good as I remember.

I had, at one time, the documentation on this unit that was stored in a pouch underneath it, but my young son "found" the paperwork and now I no longer have it, so I don't know what troubleshooting steps that paperwork would advocate.
Any ideas?

Last week frost started to form just inside the freezer door (acroos the top and along the sides for about 12 inches on each side wall). I have checked the door seal and it seems perfect and clean. The fridge is level and the doors are aligned perfectly. I have checked for frost/ice at the rear on the evaporator, but all is well and fan working. Also fan and coil at condenser are working. Can you help ?

I just replaced the Adaptive Defrost Control Board and am waiting to see if that solved my cooling and icing up issue. However, at the same time, the dispenser control board seems to have gone out. The light stays on and none of the other controls (ice, water, etc.) work when pressed. I tried unplugging the board hoping for a reset, but that did not help. I noticed on another thread that there are two control boards for this model and wonder if you could tell me which one is correct for the serial # shown above.
Thanks in advance for all help.
