Jake, just purchased a used FRS26LF7DS5 fridge knowing it needed repair. I was going pay to have it repaired but read that it may be under warranty. The manufactuer date is 12-04. Am I in? Next, the problem is this; every thing runs and sounds fine but after removing compressor access cover I found a metal (steel?) tube at left of compressor hanging down from hole near reefer lines come through. While powerd up and running this tube leaks light oil and air or gas preassure. What is it? I can send pics if you need. Thank you, Ron.

Hi Ron,
First, send a pic and lets see exactly what that is. Second, tell me where in Jersey. I'm from Jersey, Hunterdon County.

Yep, the filter dryer is gone. Jake's right about the cost and one other thing, if it's been open for any length of time it's going to need a sweep charge first to get any contaminates out of the system.

Ok, no problem, 8.50 for the part then how much should I pay for labor and sweep charge? Also, I can save on tech's visit and transport the unit myself. Paid 50.00 for it.
thanks, Ron. |

That's going to be a hard question to answer. I'll try to explain why. First it depends on the company or service tech on what pricing they use. 10 to 15 years ago everybody used the hourly, time there, time charged pricing system. Most appliance service companies charged anywhere between $40 to $60 per hour plus the service call/diagnosis fee. Certain repairs on the sealed system usually had a fixed price that factored in the cost of welding supplies, access valves, refrigerant, ect, ect. We charged $450 for compressor replacement and $300 for a leak repair. I've found that to be a pretty standard price across the States. Now most appliance service companies use the flat rate system. I use the Major Appliance Service National Price Guide (MASNPG). It lists every appliance by Brand and has a flat rate for each repair. I looked up Frigidaire-Refrigerator-Leak Repair. It lists the price $421.10. If you bring it into the shop, subtract $69.95. In your area if you call four different service companies you'll probably get four different prices. A sweep charge is basically another leak repair. After the system is repaired, you run it for a while then take out all the refrigerant, change the filter again and re-charge it with new refrigerant. This removes any particulates and moisture trapped in the system. It's done when the compressor is a burn out or the system has been open for a while. Not every company does this however. Some think it's unnecessary. If not done a problem may not show up, or may not show up for several months or even years. When it does it's usually a restriction at the filter dryer. (the part you're missing). The best way to go is; call around for some prices and see what they say. Ask about their warranty on that type repair. A very small leak might not be noticeable for months.
