Default Water Filter Bypass without a Bypass?

    Hi all,

I'm renting a place with a Frigidaire Gallery GLHS237ZA Side by Side Refrigerator. When we moved in we noticed that the filter light was red, so we went ahead and bought a PureSource2 water filter and replaced the expired one. After following all of the installation directions:

    1. Remove old filter
    2. Insert New Filter
    3. Run water for 3 minutes
    4. Press and hold the replace filter button for 10-15 seconds

We noticed that the water didn't taste very good. I tried running the water for an additional 10 minutes with no change in the flavor of the water. I then took out the new filter and noticed that it was bone dry. Apparently no water was actually going through the filter itself, so we were drinking normal tap water (which explained the taste).

I replugged it back in and ran the water for another 10 minutes with no change, for some reason the water seemed to be going directly from the hose to the dispenser without going through the filter. To further test my theory, I removed the filter entirely and tried the water dispenser, and lo and behold, I was getting water without anything coming out of the holes where the filter used to be.

Is there some switch I'm not hitting to get the water to go through the filter? Or is the fridge just busted? I was under the impression that the water is supposed to always go through the little filter area and that you needed to by some sort of filter bypass device to get the behavior I'm seeing. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Yw - the fridge seems old as well, we're also having temperature problems with the refridgerator side freezing all of our food, even with the dials set to 1 (broken thermostat?)

Thats very odd, unless someone has modified the refrigerator, the water should go through your filter, unless you have that by-pass device installed in the filter place.

Sounds like you have more problems with the temp. control, there is a upgrade kit for this issue, but its about $200.00.

So i would let your Landlord know about these issues, and see if they can get you a new refrigerator, or spend 200.00+ to fix this one.

Yeah, my first guess was that somehow they must've installed a bypass filter, or else, how in the world would the water come out of the dispenser without squirting out of the filter area. But then I looked up what the bypass actually looks like:

And it looks basically like the filter without the actual filter part (just the plugs), and therefore should be obvious if it's there. So I'm pretty baffled as to what's going on. My understanding is that water comes from the copper hose to an inlet, and then a tube runs from that to the filter, and then the filter goes to the dispenser. If I run the dispenser without the filter in place, shouldn't I see water squirting out of the holes where the filter connects?

I'll have to let the landlord know about the fridge in either case, but mainly wanted to see if I could do anything on my own to salvage the $40 I spent on the new filter.

You would think so, kinda strange!

Usually you can take filters back for a refund at most appliance parts stores.
