Loud Rod knock style noise not from compressor
Brand:
Frigidaire
Age:
1-5 years
My fridge is making a loud fast knocking noise coming from the top of the freezer compartment. The noise gets noticeably louder when the freezer door is open and DOES NOT sound like its coming from the compressor. It also only happens about twice a day for a couple hours then the fridge is back to its silent self.
The temperature is not affected by this noise and i have heard the compressor kick on without the fridge making this unusual noise.
I have turned the fridge on and off while the noise was running and the noise revs down then comes right back on with the fridge.
I though perhaps its the evaporator fan hitting ice but the parts manual for this fridge does not list or picture an evaporator fan in the system diagram even though there is mention of one in the wiring diagram. I do not have a 5 yr system warranty and the 1 yr warranty has long expired, hopefully it is not the compressor, What should I check or do to diagnose? A repair man has come out but of course the fridge functioned perfectly while he was here.

There are only 4 screws holding the lower panel on. Remove those and the 2 right above the hump in the upper panel and you can see the fan motor. Check the fan blade to see if you can push it back on the shaft. They sometimes work their way forward and hit the fan shroud. If that's not it, you'll need to pinpoint the noise.

It really seems to be coming from behind the ice maker.

That is definately the fan motor. Take the fan motor out. There are only two wires going to it. I don't think it's hitting anything, I think one side of the plastic bracket came loose. Either that or one of the rubber bushings came out. Once you get it out you'll be able to tell.

Sorry I left this hanging for a while. I finally replaced that motor and the noise was gone for a week or so but now its back. I guess that fan is riding up the shaft, will a bit of super glue help? Also I've just noticed the fridge side will sometimes shoot up to like 55 degrees while the freezer stays at 0, I've only caught it a couple times but it is a little unnerving. Thanks for all the help so far!

Thats very odd a new motor should have fixed it, where did you buy the motor at?

It was new from electrolux, a local appliance guy swapped it out while I was out of town. He left the old one and I noticed the shaft had a lot of play. The actual fan wasn't changed, It just slides on and off the motor shaft I guess??? Maybe that needs to be changed?

Not really sure, I've replaced many of these fan motors and never had one do that on the new ones. Don't think a new fan blade would resolve, but I have seen stranger things, so its up to you if you want to change the fan blade.

So there has been a new development. I came home last night and the freezer was at 50* and the fridge at 67* I restarted it and it was dead quiet. I moved the frozen stuff to a different fridge and went to go buy ice and by the time I got back the fridge was running as it normally does and temperatures were dropping. In under an hour the freezer was back to zero and the fridge was headed back to 37.
I'm not sure how much more money I want to throw at this thing, but what could cause it to warm up that bad and then behave normally after a restart?
