will not agitate, but spins, top part of agitator comes off frequently

top half of agitator comes off (maybe worn), but can be reset on top spindle of bottom half of agitator. now the machine agitator will not function, but will spin,drain all other cycles work ok

Sounds like a bad drive block.
Here's the drive block for your model:
Manufacturer part number 134418700 is RepairClinic item number 1170670

Take off #66 and #67 here:

Then you will see the bolt that holds your agitator in, just remove it and the agitator will pull up, then you can see if the drive block is stripped on the transmission shaft.
Also you'll need a new agitator to fix the top part from coming off issue.
