Default Frigidaire refrigerator hums and won't cool

Hums for few seconds then clicks off. Fridge doesn't cool. Unplugged and left off several hours, just curious, re-plugged and it cooled like a gem. Several hours the hum, click and off again. Any suggestions? Bought in early 2003 Frigidaire side/side. Please help humming and clicking comes from behind fridge. Fan blows inside fridge but not cool air.

Hi,

It sounds like your compressor is going out, call Frigidaire to come out to replace it under your 5 yr. full parts and labor warranty.

Default Frigidaire Compressor

I've called and they said they'd try a relay first, but after hearing that this model's compressor is known for trouble and will happen again even if relay temporarily fixes, I want the compressor replaced before my warranty runs out. I know they are replacing them with better ones since this model has this history. Is this an unreasonalbe request to ask them instead of the relay?

The authorized Frigidaire tech. will have to confirm you have a bad compressor and not relay, but I have done so many of these Frigidaire compressor installs, I'm about 99% sure its your compressor. The relays on these are extremely rare to go bad.

Default Doesn't Get Better Than That

Yep, tech says bad compressor.
How right you are! Gonna replace free of charge, under warranty conditions, but service tech says Frigidaire doesn't give enough to actually cover their costs of diagnosing and service, so I will have to pay the difference! When Frigidaire's warranty and (I called direct and asked) customer service says I don't pay anything! So, here's another delimma. Service tech says we can't go in the hole by the amount Frigidaire pays us to do the work. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Oh how I hate the way service companies try to get you to pay for something that is free. Don't pay it! Call Frigidaire and tell them the warranty clearly states no charge at all! Tell them to send another service company out then. I worked for A&E Factory Service, its part of Sears, they are authorized Frigidaire servicers. Call them at 1-800-905-9505. And when you call Frigidaire ask them if you can use A&E Factory Service.

Thats not right that the service company said you would have to pay diagnosing and service, I believe the only thing they said in the warranty they could charge you for is the trip charge to get to your house, which is usually $55-$65 but thats it.
