Frigidaire Professional series
Model# PLHS267ZDB7 1 AND a Half years old Newer Filter Alright here's my problem: A couple of days ago i noticed that the drip tray in the front of the fridge started filling with water... Thought maybe the kids were overfilling their glasses using the water dispenser.. It happens.. Not a big deal.. Yelled at them and told them not to use it if they cant pay attention to what their doing.... Well After some aggravation of oppening up the freezer door and getting soaked from the water in the tray a few times with the kids not using it (this is where i feel bad for blaming them) I decided to investigate further... I noticed that my ice maker was not cycling becuase it was overfilled and the rake was frozen in place.. Thought that was kinda odd.. maybe the door was not shut all the way and the ice melted a bit.. Got out the hair dryer, defrosted it, soaked up the water mess and cycled the ice maker.. It cycled and filled with water to the correct level.. So i dumped the then melting ice in the ice bin out and put it back thinking by morning i'd have a least a half bin full of ice... Wrong.. Same problem again... Ice maker overfull and rake frozen stiff and wont cycle and tray full of water again... HMM... Now im an auto mechanic not a appliance repair technician but this is where my "i can fix anything" way of thinking kicks in (usually leads to trouble on things that dont run on gas) by taking things apart and investigating... So after three days of taking things apart and putting them back together, taking all the food out and putting it back in...dont these things always break at the best times like say not long after you went to the grocery store and filled back up your freezer or fridge with food... Iv'e came to the conclussioin that i have no idea what im really doing... besides probably making things worse... Like i said i am a mechanic not a appliance repair technician.... But anyways i have figured out that when i shut the door and use the water dispenser it fills up the ice maker at the same time... which is not good.. So this is why my ice maker is getting over filled and leaking water down into the drip tray and then go's all over whoever hapens to be the lucky one to open the freezer door... Now logic would tell me that this seems to be a valve problem... But the water valve is like sixty bucks and i dont want to just throw parts at it hopping it will fix it... And pride gets in the way of calling a appliance repair guy to come out and diagnose the problem for me, just to confirm that it was indeed what i originaly thought it was... Because then i would have to pay him for his time and the parts when i might have been able to fix it myself... So in short, i would like to put this problem im having out there and see if someone can confirm that the water valve is the culprit or that i need to just break down and call someone to come fix it for me... Oh and now the only way i can get the ice tray to fill up with water is to use the water dispenser... If i manually cycle the ice maker it with not fill on its own... Probably related to the same problem... But with my luck probably not... If anyone can please help well then PLEASE HELP... Thanks |

Hi,
Quote:
These are built into one of the wire harnesses used in the refrigerator, will likely need to call Frigidaire to see which wire harness part# as the parts breakdown doesn't say. jeff.

Thanks for the advice jeff... I decided to do some research on these diodes and basicaly came up empty. Did some searching on the web for this issue and nothing. Called Fridgidaire and talked to people in parts and technical service and nobody had any clue which wire harness held the diodes. They list like seven or eight harness's with no detailed location or description.. They all said the same thing :I need to call service... But they couldnt come up with a good answer when i asked them what parts the service tech would need to order if all party's involved had they same vaugley detailed parts breakdown and wiring schematics.. They're response : Dont worry, He'll be able to fix it...Basicaly they wasted about 45 of my cell phone minutes. They ought to send me a check for MY time... Remember this fridge is only a year and a half old..
Well i finaly decided that i would try to fix it myself rather than waste anymore time... It was time to put my automotive experience with wiring to use on the fridge... First, I noticed that there were two wires in the fill circuit that had diodes and that they were the only ones in the entire wiring schematic that contained them. Second, i remembered that when is was tinkering with the water valve that two wires connected to the valve had a molded black connector in line. At first i thought the other day that was just a splice connecter because one wire went in, two came out... But comparing it to the schematic i decided that was where the diodes were. Next i had to cut the molded rubber away from the diodes which was not fun but with the right tool wasnt to hard... Next i tested the diodes with my DVOM (digital volts ohm meter) and indeed found that the diode for the ice maker circuit had failed... It was allowing voltage to pass in both direction's when it should block voltage in one direction... Time to head to radio shack... Picked up an assorted pack of 25 diodes that contained to two IN4007 Diodes i needed for $2.59, some heat shrink tubing and headed home. I soldered the diodes going the correct direction and put everything back together and presto it was fixed. Everything now functions like it should. Hard to believe that two parts that cost a total of 20 cents caused this much aggravation... Well you live and you learn, I guess...... So all is well now and i hope my experience may help anyone else out there that may experience this same problem.. |
