I just bought a new Frigidaire wall oven FEB30S6FCA
I removed my old whirlpool wall oven that was at least 12 years old. I tried to wire the frigidaire into the existing plug, but the wires on the Frigidaire are 16 awg and too small to be held by the wire clamps on the plug. The plug is N0. 80 Universal heavy duty plug 3 prongs. The old wires were 8 or 10 awg. What do I do in order to wire this oven and plug it in? The instructions show it being wired directy to junction box and not using any plug Do I need to change the entire outlet and plug? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ![]() |

I really want to help you but I'm a bit confused. Are you trying to put a 3 prong range cord on your oven so it will plug into a 3 prong range recepticle? Did your whirlpool have a cord or was it hard wired?

Yes,
I have an existing 3 prong outlet that my old wall oven used. I would like to connect my new wall oven in the same way, but the clamps on the plug will not hold the wires because they are too small. |

O.K, I think I got it. Most built-in appliances do not require a power cord, thats because they are usually "hard wired". It sounds like a power cord was added to the Whirlpool for convieniance. You can do the same thing by simply hard wiring the wires from your new oven to the old cord.Cut the old clamps off of your power cord, strip the wire back and use red wire nuts to connect one end of cord to the red wire, the other end to the black wire and the middle strand to both the white wire and the plain copper wire. Make sure the wire nuts are tight and use black electric tape to make secure.........Rick

Rick,
I took the plug receptacle out to see the hard wiring in the house and i see it only has 3 wires: (black, white, and bare copper). The new oven has 4 wires: (red, white, black, bare). The installation instructions show a 3 wire or 4 wire set-up that does not apply to my in house wiring. Therefore i don't know how to wire them in this manner. Is it better to hard wire or am i not able to based on the difference in wires? You are suggesting to cut some pieces of the old wire and connect red tp red, white to white/bare to bare, and black to black and then connect the old wires back to the plug? The new oven is a convection oven and I don't know if this matters? I am asking for further clarification because I don't want to do anything unsafe? Please clarify. Thank you for your help. |

I'm sorry I wasn't very clear. Let me try again. If you have a 220vac range recepticle in your wall, it will have 3 openings in it to accept the 3 prongs on a range power cord. Two of those are at an angle the other is straight.( between and below ) You said you took this recepticle out of the wall to look at your wiring and there were three wires;Black, White, and Copper. The black wire and the white wire should be connected to the two that are angled and the copper wire should be connected to the one that is straight. Take a reading with a volt meter between the black wire and the white wire and you should have 220vac. At this point you can either add a power cord to the new oven or hard wire directly. On your new oven you'll follow the instructions for 3 wire installation. Don't worry about the different wire sizes. For a hard wire installation, remove the three wires from the recepticle. Connect the black wire in your wall to the black wire on your new oven. Then connect the white wire in your wall to the red wire on your oven. Then take the white wire and the copper wire on your new oven, put them together and connect them to the copper wire in your wall. Your done. How was that?
RICK
