Default How to Trim Splash Guard

    Model Number: Badger 5
    Brand: -major brand-
    Age: 1-5 years

I called In-Sink-Erator and found out that my 5 year old Badger 5 has to be removed to install a new baffle. I won't buy another one that is not replaceable without removing the whole thing. I had a deep double sink installed at the same time and it was very difficult to install due to low clearance.

Anyway, the sink drainsfine but the black rubber baffle has to be held back with a spoon handle forthe water to drain freely. I know I can trim it, but how? I don't want to messit up. Do I use a utility knife or a pair of scissors? Where do I make the cuts? It has accordion like flaps. How to Trim Splash Guard-new-rubber-gasket.jpg

    Thanks in advance!

I'm not aware of any disposal manufacturer that makes it possible to replace the baffle WITHOUT having to remove the disposal unit. Your problem is something that is all too common these days. Engineers designing things on a computer and manufacturers going straight to production without testing the product first. The baffle was designed with safety in mind of course. A way of making sure that nothing comes flying out at your face when the unit is running. Altering this baffle compromises safety so I can't recommend altering it's original design for obvious reasons. If it was me I would let them send me a new baffle and then I would use my imagination, artistic creativity (and an exacto knife) to circumcise the old baffle till it looks like the new one . For you however I would recommend replacing it with the newly designed baffle. Hopefully they test flew this one so you won't waste money paying a plumber to install it just to find out it's the same problem again.

I went ahead and trimmed it. I also used the bottom of a tapered beer glass with hot water to re-mold it. Removing the whole unit is not an option for now which is why I asked the best way to trim it. Thanks anyway.
