Default Hotpoint Won't Shut Off Using Auto Dry

Hi there.

We have an 8 year old hotpoint dryer (model X BXR 453EV0WW) that runs fine except that it won't shut off when we use the auto dry option.

I talked to our local repair guy and he immediately thought it was a heating coil. I ran the dryer open and it appears both coils (when run on high) are lighting up so I'm not sure that's what it is.

When run in timed mode it does shut off. Seems to me there should be some sort of humidity sensor and from other posts for other brands it seems likely.

Any one have any ideas?

Thanks,
Brian

Thanks,

Now does the timer even move at all in the auto-dry cycle?

If not, Its likely you have a bad resistor. Its located in your console, its #80 here:

Just unplug your dryer, then take off the back console panel#72 then you will see the resistor#80.

Here's the resistor for your model you can order:
Manufacturer part#WE4M186 is RepairClinic item#276468
WE4M186

Most of the time it does not but occasionally it does move and does shut off. Sorry I did not share that before.

Ok, then I would still say you would need that new resistor.

Thanks for the info. I will get the part and install it and will report back so others have the complete story.

Well, things are better. Our dryer seems to be consistantly shutting off now. However, drying time is very long. It took about 2 1/2 hours to dry a normal sized load.

Do you think I should replace the heating coils?

Thanks.

No, I don't think the heating coils are the issue.

The Number 1 reason a dryer takes 2 hours or more to dry a load of clothes is because of a exhaust vent restriction.

Pull your dryer away from the wall, take off the exhaust vent, then run a load with the warm/hot air just flowing into your laundry room, open a window or 2 so it doesn't get to hot in your laundry room. If it dry's a normal load within an hour, then your problem is the exhaust vent to the outside of your house is clogged.
