Have a Hotpoint gas range with standing pilot, model no RGB508PPA2W,the oven will not light. If you turn oven control to 350 the standing pilot will flare up to try to light the burner, but there is no gas coming thru the burner, what controls the flow of gas to the burner? Is it the thermostat or the gas valve control or both of these? Does the thermostat tell the gas valve to open? How can I trouble shoot this range?

The thermostat tells the Safety Valve to open after the increased pilot gets the safety valve bulb sensor hot.
So your safety valve is bad and not opening to let the full gas for the oven burner through. Here's the safety valve for your model you can order: Manufacturer's Number: WB19K12 #214 is your safety valve here: ![]() Its easy to access, just take the bottom of your oven off, then the burner shield, then you'll see the burner tube with the safety valve sensor bulb attached to it, remove that bulb and the metal wire that goes to your safety valve, then remove the safety valve itself, and install the new one the same way you took off the old one. Yes, that should fix it. I've replaced alot of oven safety valves in the last 20 years for this exact same issue.
