My Hotpoint side by-side was also freezing up, so I simply turned on the dispenser light for about 24 hours and it thawed out the line. That was 2 days ago and it is still working fine.

    Default Water Line Freezing

Jake, I own a GE Profile Artica Model # pss27sgmd bs. (Side by Side) Purchased in 2001. About 2 years ago the In-Door water dispenser would occasionly stop working and then work again. After following these threads I've determined the water line is freezing in the freezer door. I unplug the water line before it enters the freezer door, (there is a connector at the door) depress water switch I get water. Using compressed air I detect a blockage in the line that runs in the door to the dispenser. I removed some of the black gasket and it appears the inside door panel is secured by adhesive and not fasteners. Is there a way to get inside to see where the freezing occurs and insulate? Thanks for your help. Great site!

    Unfortunately not.

GE also has come out with a water dispenser heater kit now:
Manufacturer part number WR49X10173 is RepairClinic item number 1381601

It comes with instructions to install it.

    Jake,

Thank you for sharing the link! Will I need to disassemble the door in order to install the heating element?

No, you shouldn't have to dissemble the whole door, just the dispenser area, it comes with complete instructions.

I haven't needed to install one myself before, so I can't tell you the step by step, but the instructions should say.

Jake - and anyone else interested - here is what happened with me regarding the line freeze issue.

I kept a log of calls to GE regarding my original issue for the line freezing back when the stove and fridge were purchased as a set 5-6 years ago. What I later found out (and is most surprising) is that GE also kept a log of all my calls to support as well. Out of frustration I would call them each time it froze - even after the warranty ended. I did everything they suggested - adjusted thermostat for both sides, multiple thaw, checked for blockage, etc. They did roll a truck during the warranty period but the tech couldn't find anything that would cause the line freeze. The unit was supposedly after the bad door insulation period and a line heater resolution was never mentioned at any time. Well after nearly a year the issue with the fridge became a two headed monster of sorts between the howling/whistling (which I fixed myself with a mainboard replacement) and the freezing line. Unfortunately the unit was out of the traditional warranty period by this time. The line was still freezing on occasion, but it was something I thought I could deal with and would likely be replacing the unit before anything failed.

Well I reached my breaking point last fall/early winter when the line froze 3 times in a 2 week span and things were barely frozen even with the thermostat set to 1. I contacted support again regarding this - and they insisted on rolling a truck again with no guarantee of resolution but would gladly take my money for an issue that should have been fixed in the first place.

GE support escalated the call to a senior representative which in turn agreed to roll a truck at their cost. What suprised me the most is that the representative also stated that after reviewing my records they were willing to give me a credit towards the purchase of a new fridge if they could not fix the line issue while the tech was on site.

The GE tech that came out gave the fridge a complete diagnosis - fan, thermostat, electrical, etc - and determined the line heater would solve my problem. As a result I can leave my freezer at a reasonable thermostat setting and I've not had any problem with the line freezing since then. The GE representative even contacted me the next day and reimbursed me for the cost of the part.

Persistence, patience, being calm and professional, and keeping good records all worked out in the end. GE has kept me as a customer as a result.

Glad GE took care of you lemmy, most folks don't have that kind of patience and give up on GE and get another brand.

Glad to hear you had patience and stuck with it.

Jake - my previous couple of major appliance purchases always brought me back to GE. My stove and fridge from 88 are in a friends rental unit chugging away. Went through the white, then the off white/cream phase. Haven't found the stainless appealing - sticking with classic black.
