Ice Dispenser Model CAN13 (WR30X10012)

When pushing the cubed and crushed door lever with a glass, all I hear is a loud CLICK. The motor does not start and the auger does not turn. I have removed the ice bucket and the auger and the motor drive fork both turn freely. Is the motor toast, the control board, or both? How do I start troubleshooting this? I have a meter and am able to check voltages, continuity, etc. Thanks very much, Don

Hi Don,

First check the door switch. That's the most common. I'll look for a tech sheet for that model in the mean time.

Thanks very much for the reply. I can't even get the CLUNK noise (which sounds like a solenoid) with the door open. But when I close the door, I get the sound when I try to get ice, so it seems the switch is makin' and breakin'. It's like a clunk, then a faint humm, like the motor is trying to run but can't.

I couldn't find a wiring diagram for that specific model so I'm going by one that I believe uses the same style dispenser. If you remove the bottom toe plate on your refrigerator, look on the right side and tucked up under there should be your wiring diagram. The best, if not easiest way to check the auger motor is pull it out. It's just four screws, two on each side of the fork assembly. The white plate and auger motor will come out together. There is a quick disconnect for the wires (Pulls apart). Once you have it out, remove the two wires on the motor and connect 110VAC (an old lamp cord with alligator clips works well) If the motor doesn't run, it's bad if it does run then the problem is probably in the dispenser control board. Your wiring diagram will tell you how to check it. It might also be a loose connection back there by the auger motor.

Thanks guys. I tried calling the GE number to see if my model is covered; nobody is home on Sundays. The serial number of my fridge is HF239488, which does not fall into the range of the covered models it looks like. But I'll try Monday to find out for sure.

I get the clicking noise when calling for cubed ice only. When the ice tray is pulled, I can see the hole shutter that the sensor (?) rod on the tray goes into opening and closing when I call for cubed ice. This is what's making the clicking noise. When calling for crushed ice, nothing happens. The only thing that dispenses is water. Does this sound like the main board problem? Thanks for all the great help, Don

I pulled the auger motor assembly, disconnected the two spade lugs from the motor, and applied 120VAC to the motor windings. It arced and blew a house 15A fuse. In the pic below, the winding wire is supposed to be attached to the spade lug; it's not as can be seen in the pic below. The motor windings from end-to-end are also open. Weather this happened during testing or not I'm not sure, but the motor is shot now. Also to the left of the motor there is a solinoid; this is what was clicking when I tried to get cubed ice. Are these motors available by themselves? Thanks very much. Don

You may just need the motor anyways since the motor windings are open.

The solenoid should be ok, it moves up for cubed ice. You can test it with the ice bucket out to see.

That happens sometimes. I should of warned you. The winding wire burns out close to the connection. When you put the cord on to test it, it moved the wire strand where it made a connection or short to a closer strand. Instead of going through the entire coil of wire, it probably went through just a couple turns. Just like putting the two ends of the power cord together then plugging it in. I'm sure that was the problem with the motor.
