GE Model DDE7108VJLAD
Yeah--it's an old model. It came with the house and the owner said "It doesn't work well and its pretty old." So the first thing I did was dig about a ton of lint out of the completely clogged vent pipe (about two linear feet of it was a solid clog). Then it worked fine. Good.
Recently it's been shutting down or refusing to re-start and I was pretty sure it was due to overheating. Tore it apart and found a two inch layer of lint coating everything inside. No wonder the thing was overheating! There was even burnt lint on the heater coils--scary!
Yup, you guessed it--when the vent was clogged, lots of moisture condensed and rusted out big holes in the bottom of the blower housing (housing weld assembly) and the internal vent pipe elbow (elbow). So some of the lint's been blowing into the dryer interior for who knows how long.
These two parts, according to three online parts outfits, including Appliance Parts Pros, are no longer available.
So my options are to find a compatible part, patch everything with duct tape, etc., or buy a new dryer.
So my questions are:
1. Are there any compatible parts that would work?
2. Any reason not to patch it up with duct tape, sheet metal, glue, pop rivets, etc.?
3. If I have to buy a new one, are Whirlpool-built dryers still the top recommendation--most reliable, etc.?
Thanks,
Fred

Hi Fred,
Yes, those parts have been discontinued.
Yes, you can certainly try any means available to patch it.
Yes, the Whirlpool-built dyers are still very reliable and good quality. Sears sells them as Kenmore models starting with model#110 as well.

Hi Jake,
Thanks for the fast response! One last question--do any other models use a compatible blower housing--the "housing weld assembly"?
The elbow pipe is easy enough to patch--wrap it in duct tape or similar--but the housing weld assembly is awkwardly shaped for an easy repair. I'll repair it one way or other, if necessary, but it would save a lot of time if a compatible replacement part could be found on another model.

Hotpoint is in the same division as GE, but its almost impossible to cross-reference your GE to a compatible Hotpoint. You can go to some used appliance shops in your town to see if you can find one that matches up to yours.

Thanks, Jake--I cleaned out a bucket full of lint from the blower housing and elbow, and from the housing on the back of the drum. Vaccumed another handful out of the motor. Patched up everything with layers of duct tape and now it works great. Hopefully we'll get another couple of years out of it . . .

Jake--another question--where is the buzzer on this dryer? It has never worked, and to be honest, I never noticed that it wasn't working.
I have been informed by the powers-that-be that the buzzer should be fixed pronto.
I opened the backsplash assembly and don't see anything that obviously looks like a buzzer, except maybe on the back of the timer.
Thanks,
Fred

Hi Fred, glad you got it working good again.
I didn't see a separate buzzer for this model either in the parts diagram, so it may be integrated into the timer.
So you can order the timer if you want and see, you have a 30 day FULL refund if the buzzer still doesn't come on after you install the timer.
Timer assembly - The manufacturer has replaced part number WE4X622 with this item, part number WE4X821

So, I explained to the powers-that-be that she can have a buzzer for $90.00, and she decided she could do better things with the money.
Anyway, I'm going to buy a cheap buzzer and see if I can just wire it in. Got any idea what kind of power is running through the buzzer?

Yes, I had a feeling your powers-that-be may reconsider the $90 buzzer.
Its usually just normal 120 volts that run through the buzzer.
Wait, I just found it, its separate from the timer, its #79 here:Part Number: AP2041907

Its still high in price at $77, and out-of-stock.

Yes, I also saw part #79 when I looked at the diagrams. Problem is, this part does not exist in my dryer. And there are no extra wires that it could be hooked up to--so no one removed it.
There is a device that looks like a speaker/buzzer attached to the back of the timer--I'll post a picture of it tomorrow if I have time.
