Default GE Monogram Freezer Problem

This should be an easy answer but it sure has me stumped. Our GE Monogram 48" side by side is having a freezer problem. The temp will go from minus 10 degrees up to about 38 degrees and then back down to minus 10 all within a 24 hour period. Everything is clean up top and the fridge side is working properly. Any help appreciated, thanks.

Hi,

Whats the model# of your refrigerator? Its located inside the refrigerator section on the upper walls or ceiling.

Its possibly your motherboard thats causing this problem.

Thanks for your help with this problem. I am a hundred miles away from a good service center and I need to fix the problem myself. Best regards, Ted DeLorme
Ok, on your model you don't have the motherboard like with other GE models.

So, let me get more information, was the refrigerator running when you noticed this problem? or not running? If it was running, did you hear the fan in the freezer running? or dead silent?

Jake the unit was working fine, both freezer and fridge. About three weeks ago the freezer started warming up to 38 then back down to minus 10. The freezer side is making a strange noise since this started but it's not like a fan blade hitting something. More of a soft whining noise. From my very limited knowledge, it seems like the unit stays in defrost mode longer than necessary. But, it may not even have a defrost mode. Thanks, Ted

Ok Ted,

That strange noise could be your freezer fan motor bearing that may be starting to go out.

I haven't worked on many of these built-in GE refrigerators to even tell you the steps to open the back panel to check it, but it looks like its underneath this #5831 panel in your freezer:

Motor - Evaporator Fan
P/N: WR60X190
http://www.pcappliancerepair.com/cgi-bin/promote-detail.cgi?item=WR60X190&brand=GEH&affiliate_id=AppBlog

The defrost cycle should only last for 20-30 minutes every 8 hours or so.

Thanks, Jake. Anything else I should replace while I've got the freezer torn down?
