Default GE Triton GSD5560G00SS - top rack not cleaning properly

Hi Jake,

I have a GE Triton GSD5560 GOOSS, probably installed around 2004 or earlier. The top rack does not clean properly, and here is more I can tell you:

-Water temp going in is about 113 F, measured at the faucet next to the dishwasher.

-The telescoping tube does go up, as it is going down when I suddendly open the dishwasher mid-cycle.

-Sometimes after cleaning, that telescoping tube is still slightly stuck in the up position, and a couple times I have not seen it and pulled out the bottom drawer, and have run into the tube sticking up. A simple push puts it back in its place.

-When I place cups on the top rack right side up to catch water, they don't catch much at all when placed in the corners, but the back right corner does seem to get filled and sometimes both back cups get filled.

-A whlle back ago I noticed that the "Light Wash" cycle wasn't draining properly, but on "Normal" cycle matters worked fine.

Your input is valued. Thanks for creating this forum.

Hi,

Your water temperature should be at least 120 degrees coming into it.

Did you check your filter screen at the bottom of your tub inside? Its #502 here:

Jake,

Just visually checked the screen, and it looks fine, unless I should be looking for something in particular.

As for the water temp, our building manager was in yesterday and he said no one else in the building is having problems with water temp, but I will send something to him asking if it can't be increased to 120.

Any other thoughts? Do you feel something might be stuck in the screen, or should I unscrew the bolts holding it in and lift it out to check underneath?

Best,

Mie

Yes, I would lift it out to check.

Thanks,

Sorry for the dumb question, but how do I lift it out? I am reluctant to start bending metal sheets. If I am to unscrew the assembly above it, what kind of driver would I need? I don't feel right using a crescent wrench on that.

Thanks in advance,

Mie

You would need to take off the spray arm first. Then that #504 part is the dome/coarse filter.

This spray arm is threaded into a part under the tub/liner of the dishwasher. A rubber coupler on top of the motor and pump assembly is what this spray arm assembly screws/threads into. To change/remove this spray arm, simply push a flat screwdriver through the hole in the bottom of the spray arm and twist it off. It should be a regular thread.

I was able to get the cover off the "grinder assembly" found lots of white, stringy junk, which I removed. Now I will work on removing the spray arm assembly to completely lift out the screen. At the front are two pegs which let the screen attach downwards, but it looks like it will be a challenge to pry it off that area.

I am presuming that is what you suggest a flat screwdriver to assist with.

More later.

Yes, a flathead screwdriver.

Couldn't figure out where and at what direction to insert the flat screwdriver to remove the sprayarm, and didn't want to break any plastic. So, any guidance along those lines would be great. Should the screwdriver be vertical or horizontal? Do I want to pry against something?

Was able to get behind it though, and remove the screen (not shown in the schematic, but seems to filter out larger particles and then got below that to a double chambered sort of screening system, in which there was water and more of that stringy, white stuff.

So far I have done a lot of cleaning of systems but still don't know what I should be looking for or fix. Any guidance is appreciated.

You should push-in on those 2 clips and turn the spray arm counter-clockwise to remove it. I know its abit tricky to do it.

With all the cleaning you've done, why don't you try to use your dishwasher now and see if its working properly again first.
