Default GE Profile freeze not cold

Great site and thanks in advance for any help. My GE profile side by side fridge freezer isn't as cold as it should be. We are starting to see food thaw out and popsicles melt. After reading thru other threads with similar problems it appears maybe the defrost mechanisms have gone bad as the back freezer panel has frost all over it. I'm assuming if I take that panel off I'll see the coils have frosted over as well? My fridge model#PSS26NGSB BB.

I'm assuming I'll need to defrost it to get it working normal assuming it's not something more serious like the mobo bad or a defrost part bad? What are some good first steps I should take to find out what could be wrong exactly?

Thanks.

Default Ge freezer not cold.

You can check the outlet where the waste water travel, for blockage. If it is not blocked you would have to check the timer, defrost thermostat or the heater.

On this model there isn't a defrost timer, the defrost control is integrated in the motherboard.

There's no way to force a defrost on this model, so you will need to ohm your defrost thermostat for continuity while frosty and ohm the defrost heater as well.

Just unplug your refrigerator first, then take the food/shelves out of the freezer, then remove the lower back access panel#213 inside the freezer, Then ohm the defrost thermostat for continuity(while its frosty) should read 0-1 ohm.

Here's the defrost thermostat for your model:
Manufacturer's Number: WR50X10068

WR50X10068

If the defrost thermostat checks good, then ohm your defrost heater

Just remove the electrical wires that connect to the defrost heater, then put your ohm meter probes across the heater terminals and see what it reads. That should read the same if its good.

Here's the defrost heater for your model, in case you need to order it:
Manufacturer part#WR51X10055 is RepairClinic item#914088

Your defrost thermostat is #240 and defrost heater is #230 here:

If those check good then its your motherboard thats bad.

Here's the motherboard for your model you can order:
Manufacturer part number WR55X10942 is RepairClinic item number 1531075
WR55X10942
