Post Problem w/Spacemaster

We bought our Spacemaster Microwave in 1997 and have had no problems with it until recently. This doesn't happen with every use but, say, once out of every ten uses, when you push the Start button a tremendously LOUD popping/zapping sound occurs. I mean, it's unbelievably loud and forceful. Today when my husband experienced it for the first time, he said he smelled smoke simultaneously. Any ideas what might cause this and whether or not it should simply be replaced vs. having a service person take a look? My husband already dismantled the microwave and didn't see any loose/suspicious-looking wires. Thanks for any help you might give us.

Forget it--looks like we found the problem--now it's just a matter of determining whether or not it is worth fixing or just trashing in favor of a new one. Thanks anyway.

That symptom is often caused by just a defective HV diode which should not be that expensive to replace if the problem in your case.

JFYI
