Default Ice problem

Our icemaker makes ice but then it melt and refreezes so that it is generally a big block of frozen-together ice. And obviously won't go down the chute. Otherwise the temp seems fine for all other foods. What's up?

Hi,

Model#?

Might be melting together or might not.

High spike temp during the defrost mode, wide temp swings from temp control can cause the cubes to melt together.
Leaking from the icemaker into the bin can also give a lump of cubes.

Might be a good idea to have someone check it out for you to see what is happening.

Hello ffice:smarttags" />lace w:st="on">Elizabethlace>fficeffice" />>>

It is unlikely that you Ice being produced by your ice Maker is actually melting and then refreezing to form that large pool of ice you are seeing form in the bottom of your Ice Bucket. Your issue could be related a couple of possible causes. The first one being a fault in your ice Maker itself. The Ice Maker may be energizing the fill valve for a longer then normal fill time causing your Ice Maker mold to become over filled with water and the excess water is dripping out of your ice Maker mold and pooling in your Ice Bucket, then freezing. Or, your Ice Maker fill tube may be out of position causing water to bypass your Ice Maker Mold. And drip into your Ice Bucket. To locate the source of your problem, you should advance the ice Maker harvest cycle and examine the fill cycle to verify proper operation. Although that may be difficult for the inexperienced. An easier solution for you may be to examine the ice Maker once you have heard it fill automatically. The fill cycle can be recognized by a 6-8 second hiss sound coming from your Refrigerator. Once you have heard the unit fill examine it for an overfill or miss filling situation.>>

Default More specific info on ice problem

OK we looked more carefully at our icemaker (Hotpoint CSX24DG) and the very top of the freezer including the back panel to the icemaker area is actually warm. The ice underneath was fine but the ice on the top of the pile did the melting together thing. So what is making the top part of our freezer warm and what do we do abut it?

A service tech would often install a temp recorder to see what is happening or not happening when we are not paying attention to the refrigerator and the temp recorder will show the on's and off's and temp swings during the defrost cycles to make a better call on what is happening.

During a defrost cycle this will occur. The hard part is figuring out what is normal and what is ecessive.

jeff.

That is true, recording the temperatures with data loggers can be a useful aid in determining temperature Issues.

During the defrost cycle the defrost thermostat should open before the freezer compartment gets excessively warm. It is possible for a defrost thermostat to be sticking and not opening at the designated set point. Typically defrost thermostats are designed to open and cut power to the defrost heater at temperatures ranging from 36 to 45 degrees F depending on the design and manufacturer of your Refrigerator. fficeffice" />>>
>>
Your Refrigerator has a defrost timer that advances the unit into defrost, voltage travels through the defrost timer to the defrost thermostat and then through the defrost heater. You first have to determine if you have a defrost issue or a sealed system issue. Remove the Evaporator cover located in the freezer compartment. Examine the frost pattern of your Evaporator. If your Evaporator is frosted over evenly, you can almost certainly rule out a sealed system issue. >>
>>
If you have ruled out a sealed system issue, you will have to evaluate the defrost system. If your defrost system is operating correctly, you should evaluate your thermostat for erratic behavior.>>
>>
Please keep in mind that when operating correctly a defrost circuit should not allow a freezer compartment to warm up to a temperature that would cause your ice to melt excessively. If the defrost thermostat has been designed to open at 38 degrees F and it is mounted in the freezer compartment on the low side line on the Evaporator, theoretically it would open well before the heater would be able to bring the entire freezer compartment to warm up to a point that would cause the ice in your Bucket to melt as extensively as you have mentioned.>>
>>
This is not a normal occurrence, and if you diagnose this to be the cause, please change your defrost thermostat and it might also be wise to determine how long your defrost timer is active in the defrost Circuit. The Timer may be an 8 Hour Cool & 20 minute Defrost or 6 Hour Cool and 16 Minute Defrost. To determine this remove you’re Defrost Timer and you will find the rating listed on the Timer. >>
>>
I hope this information has been of assistance. If you feel overwhelmed, it may be wise to contact a Technician for further assistance.>>
