Default GE side by side randomly dispensing ice

    Model Number: GSH25JSXBSS
    Brand: GE
    Age: 1-5 years

Last night at about 3:15am my wife and I were awakened to the sound of our refrigerator dispensince ice. It is a very distinctive sound... the auger runs, grinding against the ice and the ice falls out of the chute. We had a house guest last night, and wondered if she decided that she needed some ice, so we layed in bed for about a minute before it dawned on us that she probably wouldn't need to get ice at 3:15am either... The sleep numbed brain has a different set of logical rules loaded.

By the time we ran downstairs and stopped the problem, the dispenser had hemoraged about half of the ice in the freezer. I wiggled the dispenser lever and this seemed to solve the issue. We went about sleeply picking up the ice. When we were almost done, the dispenser started up again! I fixed the issue by pressing the "lock" button on the dispenser control panel. I think that this was a good lesson... If this had happened when we were out of town, we could have ended up with water damage to our wood floors! From now on, the "lock" button will be engaged when we are out of the house for extended periods of time.

Has anyone heard of this problem before? Any suggestions for a fix? Waiting and seeing if it was a minor glitch and/or leaving the "lock" button engaged doesn't feel like a good long term solution. I am relatively handy and feel confident that I could take apart the dispenser unit to replace solenoids, boards, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

BTW, first time on the forum. After reading through a dozen threads or so, it is clear that the users and admins have a wealth of knowledge!

    Hi,

It sounds like the microswitch might be sticking. The best way I can tell you to check it is to listen for the microswitch "click" when you remove the glass.

Thanks Jake! I took apart the face of the dispenser this evening to check the switch out. There was nothing obviously wrong, but it could still be intermittently failing. I went ahead and ordered a new switch and will replace the part when it comes in. If the problem comes back with the new switch, I'll post back.

    Thanks again for the help!
