Default GE Top Freezer (gts22ibmarww) Evaporator Motor Problems

Hello, my GE top freezer, model gts22ibmarww has had problems with the Evaporator fan motor (I think that's the part?) since we've owned it. I'm about ready to replace the whole refrigerator as a result, but I'm looking for a second opinion.

    Here's the history:

    1) a few months after buying it in 2001, it started making a buzzing noise, coming from the freezer compartment. A repairman made some adjustments to the components accessed from within the freezer compartment after some disassembly--what I'm assuming is the evaporator fan motor, etc,. The noise ended, and it worked fine for a few more years.

    2) Last summer (2005) it stopped cooling properly--the temperature started to rise in the refrigerator compartment. The repairman replaced the evaporator fan motor, stating it should have been replaced in the original repair. He also replaced a small circuit board in the back (not sure which, but perhaps having to do with the thermostat?). He replaced the board with the unit still plugged in, and apparantly damaged the larger motherboard (it stopped making ice properly), and later replaced that at his cost.

    3) A few months after that repair, the freezer starting building up frost, and the evaporator fan motor would occasionally be noisy. It's now 2006, the motor is running very loudly, and while the refrigerator compartment is holding a somewhat cold temperature, adjusting the thermostat isn't lowering the temperature.

Rather than sinking any more money into this one, I'm planning to replace it, having found a Kenmore Trio Elite (model 76582000) at my local Sears outlet for $875. Is that the right course of action?

    Thanks for your help!

    Christy

Yes, The GE's have had multiple problems in the last 5 years.

The Kenmore Trio is a good choice.

Default Followup to evaporator motor problem

    Thanks for your help!

I'm replacing the motor so I can sell the GE as a working used fridge (goodness knows I've seen it serviced enough times to figure out how to replace the part!), but I have to plead ignorance on one step: there is a green ground wire coming from one of the screws on the motor mount: where should it get attached?

    Thanks!

Attach it to any metal framing on the motor if possible.

Here's a pic--the motor doesn't have much exposed metal, and you can see where the green wire is attached. Suggestions? Thanks so much for your help!

I have the same problem. My model # is GTS22IBMARWW and the evaporator fan is not running. I thought it was the mother board problem and so I replaced it. But still the fan does not run. Any guesses on what could be wrong?

I read some of the posts (including this one) and most of the posts talk about a defrost timer or something similar. I cannot locate it in my refrigerator. I looked at my parts list & found a part with the name THERMOSTAT DEFROST (Part #WR50X10068) but I cannot locate it based on the diagram.

Also, in one of the posts, I noticed that someone put a service document. Is there a service document available for my model?

Normally on these GE's if the fan motor goes out it also takes out the motherboard, both should be repalaced at the same time...you do not have a seperate "defrost timer" that motherboard runs everything in this sorry excuse for a frig...

For this particular fan motor, how do I check if it is getting enough power or not? There are 4 wires that go into the motor unit. The wires are connected to some kind of adapter that fits into another one. This other adapter also has four wires coming out and they all go inside the back panel of my refrigerator.
