Default Defrost timer and replacing a thermostat

I have a GE model GSS22wgpd side by side. I've read some of the other threads and have narrowed the problem down to the thermostat, timer and/or defrost unit. (coils were frozen top to bottom and fridge/freezer were not cold). I could not find the timer, looked in all of the places noted in the appliance aid web page and just did not see it. Also went to order a new thermo and heater and there was no timer to be purchased. Can you tell me where it can be located and/or if this model has one?

Since I could not find it, I ordered and rec'd a new defrost heater and thermostat just in case. Replacing the heater looks straight forward so I'm not worried about that. Problem is the thermostat. It looks like I have to cut the wires and splice the new one in because the wires both go to wiring harnesses. Is this a correct assumption and if so, what's the safest way to splice in the new thermo??
