My GE TFX27FHD side/side went into defrost and never came out. The repair tech diagnosed a bad defrost timer and replaced it with one he had in the truck. The new timer wouldn't complete a full cycle either so he replaced it with another new timer. This second timer was specially ordered and came out of a GE sealed plastic bag. The timer allows the refrig to run until it goes into the defrost mode and then the timer stops. I turn the timer manually a few clicks and the refrig starts up again immediately. I have done this every 8 hours for 4 days. Any ideas on why the timer won't continue it's cycle completely?
Thanks! |

Hi,
Timer is wired wrong, timer motor is wired wrong, broken wire to the timer...would be my guess. Defrost timer control, 4 individual wire connectionjeff.

Thanks Jeff1 for you advice.
The repair tech used the exact timer you speced (Sanyo TMDJ830RH9) but the pins are a little different than the original SA1650 (LR8376) - pins 1 & 3 are for the motor on both timers but pin 1 is common on the original and pin 3 is common on the Sanyo. As far as I can tell, the timer is wired properly (I can't find an exact schematic and the wiring colors don't match). I disconnected pin 1 to see if the refrig would still operate and it did and the motor didn't run which it shouldn't. I then reconnected pin 1 but disconnected pin2 to make sure the defrost heater wasn't drawing the voltage down too low. I measured line voltage across the motor (pins 1 & 3) while the refrig was operating. I slowly turned the timer manually until it switched to defrost mode and then checked pins 1 & 3 and no longer had line voltage. This partially explains why the timer stops but now I need to find out where the voltage is supposed to originate. The generic diagram I have shows that it comes directly from the fresh air thermostat but that can't be the case for this model. I also ran tests on the original defrost timer and verified that it works OK when I connect it to an outside line voltage source. Do you have any idea where the line voltage originates for this timer when it's in the defrost mode or where I might be able to obtain a schematic diagram for this refirg? Thanks for whatever light you can shed on this!! |

Did you find the diagram that comes with the refrigerator? On the back, underneath, beside the controls are common places for it. If missing, GE is the only place you may get another. **SAMPLE ONLY!** jeff.
