Well after owning this unit about a month I find myself ambivilent about the GE Arctica; pss26msrb. It's a nice unit, S/S is kind of a pain to keep clean, but at least it is true Stainless. My two major complaints are 1) the sliding shelfs and drawers continually drop off the tracks due to the metal contracting and 2) the bottom fruit drawer in the refrigerator is quite persnickity about being pushed back into place. I really am unhappy about freezer issue, enough so that I contacted GE for help. It will be interesting to see the response, but I am pretty sure it's going to be "Thanks for purchasing a GE Arctica, sucker!"

Jake,
Thats reassuring. Says alot about the craftsmanship of today's appliances. I need to call them - I have been told to contact Consumer Relations, Who knows what they will say. I still have the option of returning the unit to Best Buy. I am sure that will make them happy. I went there over the weekend and the sales person told me that I was the first she heard of my problem with the shelves and drawers in the freezer. Plus the BB I was at didn't have any GE refrigerators on the floor? An omen? As far as the ESP, the CSR I bought the refrigerator with didnt offer it. I did see the one in the owners manual, but I figure that since the unit is new and I used AMEX I get the AMEX Extended Coverage as well. We shall see. Hopefully (wishfully) GE will just upgrade me to this years model. I has filing cabinet type slides on the drawers and shelves (in the freezer at least). |

Yea, I'm Sorry I had to say that, I would have never said that 10 years ago.

Well after several phone calls and some emails with pictures to show them the problem I have a service call scheduled. Earlier this week GE FedEx'ed new baskets and shelves for the freezer, but they just dropped right down like the original ones did. This leads me to think that the freezer sides are too far apart, a manufacturing defect. Tuesday will tell. SO far GE has been pretty good in dealing with me - I am calling Consumer Relations now.
Best Buy on the other hand has basically washed their hands of me. Since I didn't get their ESP (not offered to me when I purchased the unit) and more than 30 days have past, I have been told to go through GE. I should fire off an email to Best Buy Corporate about this. I feel that it's a crock - spend money with them and then they don't stand behind the product. This is a manufacturing defect IMHO. I did buy it on AMEX so that may be another resource to use - they offer that return guarantee, but it probably has limitations on what and how much it covers. |

OK, here's the scoop on the falling shelves. According to the GE tech that came out, this unit was made in two plants. One of which did not put enough insulation in the freezer leading to the wrong clearance between the sides of the freezer. GE has a kit that has slightly larger shelves and baskets to address this issue. Also needed are the plastic face for the new baskets, the shelf trim is reused. I am glad that this is fixed, but extremely disappointed in Best Buy's attitude at the store level.
