Default KUDI01FLSS5 will not stay shut after link replacement, gunk in door

Right link broke on my KUDI01FL, so I replaced the link. No problem. Now the door won't stay shut. I had the same problem when the dishwasher was just over a year old and Kitchenaid was kind enough to replace the door latch. Could the door latch coincidentally have gone bad again, or is it possible that the strike was disturbed when I removed and replaced the dishwasher? (I note that a reversed seal can cause this problem, but I have not touched the seal.) Door will eventually stay shut after repeated hard closings, but sometimes pops open in the middle of wash.

When checking the latch with door panel removed, I noticed about 1/4" of gunk in the bottom lip of the inner door. It looks like dirty wash water and food debris is coming up underneath the bottom of the door and lodging there. Dishwasher has been progressively getting more noisy and noise sounds like it is coming from the bottom of the door. Could the bottom door seal (or air inlet) be bad? (Allowing noise and gunk to escape?) it looks like there is a flexible plastic strip at the bottom of the door that may have been folded over.

Great site, btw!

Its hard to tell whats causing the door to pop open.

Hopefully another tech. or member that has experienced this more can help shed some light on it.

What about the gunk in the bottom of the inner door frame or tub? Should any food debris be accumulating anywhere? Would this indicate need to replace some sort of bottom seal? I don't even see one on the parts diagram.

I see junk all the time at the bottom of the inside door, that shouldn't cause it to pop open. If it was leaking water down there, then you would replace the seal.

Unhappy Verdict

It was the latch. Replaced and it is fine. Pretty poor design, if you ask me. This is the second latch replacement in 3 years.

Gunk/liquid in inner door is still a mystery. It looks like it must be coming up through the air vent or perhaps the air vent isn't tight and it is running down behind it. It can't be intended to have liquid, gunk, and all kinds of mold growing in the door.

Angry But wait...

After a week with the new latch the dishwasher has started popping open again. It first popped open right after the fill cycle completed when a noisy motor started (see my other post: KUDI0FLSS5 very noisy ) and then popped open later in the cycle when I was asleep. Nothing like waking up to unwashed dishes!

What else could it be? Vibration from motor problem causing door to open? It definitely stays shut before operation begins wheras before it wouldn't.

Could the strike be an issue? It doesn't look worn. Any tips on adjusting it?

Thumbs up Redesigned strike did the job!

Thanks for the link. My model number wasn't specifically mentioned but I ordered the new strike anyway. Less than a minute to change it out and the dishwasher is staying shut again. Difficult to see any difference, but it looks like there have been some tiny changes to the shape of the strike.
