Default [FIXED] Kitchenaid not draining completely in cycle

Our Kitchenaid KUDI01TJBL0 is not draining completely at the end of wash cycles. If I hit cancel/drain, it will then drain completely, so it doesn't seem to be a blockage, seems more of a timing thing. I assume all the timing is electronic, and I tried unplugging the machine and plugging it back in to see if the brain would reset, but no change in symptoms. The wife also thinks the dishes aren't getting as clean as they used to. I'll take her word for it, as I am fairly oblivious. Any ideas on things to go after? Thanks!

Hi,

Possibly your chopper screen or check valve is causing it.

Chopper Part#8268383

The rubber round flapper part should be straight up/down, no curves in it.

Check Valve Part#8268375

Here's the repair manual for your model:
https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/52521bdbd0ef763c85256cbc00520548/$FILE/8178022.pdf

Page 17 Read 1-4 where it says this:

SERVICING COMPONENTS INSIDE THE WASH TUB
Removing the Inner Feed Tube and
Lower Spray Arm

Then on Page 21 it starts to get into detail of how to access the rest where it says this:
Accessing Components of the Sump Assembly

It shows how to get access to the chopper screen and check valve.

Thanks for the reply - I will check it out when I get home from work. Just wanted to verify that the link for the service manual is correct - the manual that comes up doesn't match my model number, but they may be equivalent and it isn't obvious.

Yours is identical to the one in the repair manual link.

Kitchenaid is Made by Whirlpool.

So I took everything apart last night, and I think progress was made, though the problem isn't solved. There was some caked-on soapy goo in the sump cavity, and the chopper was a bit fouled but appeared in generally good repair. The check valve was intact and did not seem at all deformed. I cleaned everything up and put it back together. The check valve is a tight fit, which I didn't expect since the service manual has the note to simply "drop it in place." There was no dropping involved, I pretty much had to jam it into the slot.

Anyway, I hadn't realized it when I first posted yesterday, but the machine wasn't even completing a wash cycle yesterday morning. It would just cut out and stop. Now it completes the wash cycle again, but it still doesn't drain everything out of the bottom, so I didn't get to the root problem.

Any other ideas? Look for a partial obstruction of the drain perhaps? Maybe pump degredation? Time to call for help?

Thanks again!

Yes, if everything checks out ok in the sump assembly, then check the drain hose that connects underneath to your garbage disposal or that directly goes in your sink plumbing.

Then check your drain motor.

Here's the drain motor for your model:
Manufacturer's Number: 661658

Page 21 here shows you how to take apart the drain motor:
https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/52521bdbd0ef763c85256cbc00520548/$FILE/8178022.pdf

This draining issue can get rather involved as JeremyH found out here:
Draining Issue
He about gave up, then suddenly it started working. His dishwasher uses the exact same drain motor as yours.

Looks like JeremyH had more than his share of fun, and I can't help but notice some similar issues with my case. Looks like I know how I'll be spending some time this weekend. I loves me an adventure...

Default Update - I am an idiot

Well, we haven't run the machine, so I cannot guarantee success, but I have high confidence. I decided to go after the drain hose to make sure it didn't have blockage, and in the process I think I have pinpointed the exact moment when things started working poorly. I partially filled the machine and started draining it and poked my head under the sink to see if I could see anything as it was draining, and couldn't help but notice the drain hose basically completely obstructed by pumpkin seeds at the interface with the disposal. Turns out we overloaded the system a bit when we were carving pumpkins a couple days before Halloween. I'll let you know if removing the seeds solved the problem once we run it next. Thanks again!

Ok, yes, it sounds like the pumpkin seeds may be the cause.

Yes, please let us know if that was it.
