Default Whisper Quiet DW not quiet anymore

We have a 3-year-old dishwasher (KUDP02CRBS1) that is now very noisy when it is running. The noise is like a very loud hum, continouous. No grinding noises. From what I have read here and elsewhere, it appears to be the motor. My husband and I removed the kick panel last night and looked underneath--no leaking anywhere. We were not able to pull it out, and other than 2 screws holding the sides in place (which we removed), we could not find any other screws. Still it would not budge.

My question is twofold: does this, in fact, sound like a bad motor, and if so, how do we remove the dishwasher to replace it? Of course, the instructions manuals do not address this issue, and KA customer service was equally non-helpful.

Thank you,
Holly

Hi Holly,

You have 2 motors on this model, the wash motor and the drain motor. Does it make this hum throughout the wash cycle or when its draining?

Wow, you are fast! It makes the noise throughout the wash cycle. It starts as soon as we turn it on and pretty much lasts until it's over.

Ok Holly,

Your dishwasher should just pull out, there shouldn't be anymore screws holding it in.

But you also have to disconnect your plumbing to it, turn off your water supply to it first, its usually underneath your sink.

Then you also have to remove the electrical connection to it, it should be in a metal junction box in the front bottom of your dishwasher, Turn off your breaker to the dishwasher first!

Then you also have to remove your drain hose/clamp in the front.

Its quite a job.

Here's the cheapest price I found for the motor for your model:
Manufacturer's Number: 8535760

8535760

Here's the repair manual for your model:
https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/52521bdbd0ef763c85256cbc00520548/$FILE/8178022.pdf

Page 17 Read 1-4 where it says this:

SERVICING COMPONENTS INSIDE THE WASH TUB
Removing the Inner Feed Tube and
Lower Spray Arm

Then on Page 21 it starts to get into detail of how to access the rest where it says this:
Accessing Components of the Sump Assembly

OK, I'm sorry, but I'm very new at this and need some clarification re: your post. I read the pages in the manual that you listed, and it looks like I don't pull the dishwasher out at all--that I just access the pump assembly through the bottom of the tub by removing the spray arm assembly. Is that correct? Or do I have to pull the dishwasher out first in order to then remove the spray arm assembly?

And my second question pertains to the wash motor. Do I follow the directions on page 20 (Removing the Wash Motor, under Servicing Components in the Sump Assembly) or page 21 and beyond? I guess I'm not clear on which instructions I should be following. Also, is this something that is fairly straightforward to do, or are there lots of tricks and tips one needs to know to do this right?

Yes, you don;t have to pull the dishwasher out to take out the sump/motor assembly, but if you never changed it before, then its the easiest way to change it, but if your mechanically inclined, then just follow the instructions in the repair manual and it should be fine.

Yes read beyond page 21.

Changing the complete sump/motor assembly is much easier, but cost more money, would you rather do that?

Here's the sump/motor assembly for your model:
Manufacturer part number W10237170 is RepairClinic item number 1548392

If it is significantly easier (meaning we could do it ourselves without problems), I think I might prefer to replace the whole assembly, if we can do it without pulling the dishwasher out. Our concern is that we've never done this before and don't want to make things worse.

Thank you very much for all of your help. You are fantastic.

Yes, you can do it without pulling your dishwasher out, but its much harder to do that way unless you've changed the sump/motor before.

As its more difficult to reach your hand below the tub to remove the drain motor, the 3 plastic sump mounting clips and the thermistor.
