Kitchen aid superba KSCS25FKSS00 problems
Brand:
KitchenAid
Age:
6-10 years
I have a Kitchen aid superba refigerator, model KSCS25FKSS00, purchased in 2004. Recently the freezer section began to no longer stay cold enough to keep frozen foods frozen. The contents were removed. The frigerator side kept items cool not cold like they use to be. I adjusted the led controls for colder setting for both , no noticeable change. I noticed the front coils underneath were very dirty, shop vac'd and air compressor blew those clean. I removed the drip tray that was close to 3/4 full of moldy water. The unit is not hooked up to a water source. The fan next to the compressor is turning, although when I first plugged it in after cleaning the area had to start it by hand , the compressor top gets extremely hot as do the copper line supply and return. About a week ago we had a partial power failure, where with my incandescent light s were only producing half power. The problems with the freezer began before the power issue. I removed any frozen items from the bottom most shelf, so that air can circulate through the openings. Are there any diagnostic tests on the components that you could recommend as a way to pinpoint where the problem is .

I don't have the tech. data sheet for this model, you should have it, it would be located behind the bottom kickplate grille.
So you turned the condenser fan blade that sits next to the compressor and the fan started running on its own? Did it stay running?

Jake thank you. The fan near the compressor did not spin when I turned the unit on this morning. I spun it and then it kept going on its own. I looked for the tech sheet behind the front black plastic grill. Where exactly would it be . I had removed the drip tray and the in line filter housing, did not see it there. I turned the unit on , and placed individual thermometers in each side. Noticed air flow coming into the frig side at the top left vent, considered moderate flow. Heard fan running in the freezer compartment will check for frost on those coils, in about an hour. Thanks Jake

Jake an update. I turned on the unit this morning after extensive cleaning yesterday, with the unit unplugged. After starting the fan manually I let it run for an hour and a half, with the freezer and frigerator empty. The temp controls set for the coldest setting . After an hour and a half the temp on the thermometers read from initial start points of 78 degrees now at 2 degrees for freezer and 48 degrees for the frigerator side . From the vents in the bottom freezer section I see light frost on the visible elements. I hear the freezer fan running. Do I need to remove the white sheet metal back plate to check the coil unit. Door frame between doors hot as is compressor , still running (understandable as for interior setting choice on led readout. Compressor fan still running on its own. Noticeable increase in airflow from freezer to frigerator as I open the freezer door. Condensate pan clean and dry. Still can't locate tech sheet. Tried to download it said it was harmful download. Did not download. Unit sounds a little noisier than before trouble started. Still have rear cardboard panel off for observation of components.

It sounds like the problem is the condensor fan motor. Once you replace the fan motor you'll need to replace the cardboard back over the machine compartment so the air is directed over the condensor coils.

Yes I agree with Rick, your condenser fan motor not starting on its own is the problem. I'd order that.
For now I'd also put a portable fan back in the back of your refrigerator aim it so its blowing air at the compressor, then give it some time and see if your refrigerator section cools down more to normal: 36-40 degrees.
