Question LG french door repair questions

Hi,
I have one of the early french door counter depth fridges by LG (model #: 21760SW). I've had this unit for almost 3 years so it's out of warranty. I have two problems with it at this time:

1) The ice maker died. From my google searches, this seems to be a common problem. My question is, has anyone successfully repaired the icemaker? My initial probing shows that there is power to the unit but nothing lights up. Considering that this is a common failure I suspect a bad component in the power supply circuit on the unit. If anyone has any input I'm all ears.

2) This fridge has a control center with water dispenser on the left door. The water dispenser quit while the unit was still under warranty. I wasn't home when the tech came, but apparently the connector for the microswitch slid off it's contact. As you might suspect it happened again and I'm having a bear of a time taking the control panel off. There seem to be 4 snap-in clips accessible through 2 tiny slits on the bottom of the panel. I tried bending them to the outside, but no luck. I thought they might be hooks and the panel just slides up (which would make sense), but no luck. I'm stuck and I don't want to break the clips - help!

Is this a Sears Kenmore LG(model# should start with 795.) or just the LG brand itself?

It's just an LG model. There was no section for LG, so I wasn't sure where to post this.

Oh ok, I wouldn't know myself then. Hopefully another tech. or member with this model can help you out.

Fridge model: LRFC21760SW

Heh, looks like I'll answer my own question, hopefully someone else will find this useful. The tabs on the control panel (mounted on the door) should be bent inwards (toward the center of the panel)... Having said that no amount of persuasion would convince the tabs on mine to let go without carnage. I have an early production run model, so maybe they fixed it in newer samples. Either way, there is a provision for two screws in the panel which are blank, so it looks like they didn't expect the hooks to survive anyway. As I've discovered the tech who took the panel off before me must have had better tools, but he still broke 2 or 3 tabs. Not the end of the world, a new panel (plastic) can be had for about $13. Only the top hooks on my panel survived.

The reason the water dispenser didn't work was because the trigger leaver which presses on the microswitch fell out of place. This in turn was due to the fact that the trigger required too much travel to turn on the water and if you press it too hard... you guessed it, the leaver pops out of place (not the greatest design). It just so happen, that my wife bought some 3m double-sided mounting tape to hang some stuff for the kids and it was sitting on the kitchen counter. With a bit of trial and error I used the tape (leaving the plastic on the side touching the leaver) to reduce the trigger travel required to turn on the water. Therefore there is no need to press hard, reducing the likelyhood of dislodging the lever again. I also used a stack of double-sided tape pieces in place of the bottom two panel tabs I broke during removal, and screws in the blanks up top.

I still don't have a functioning ice maker, but I don't feel "īnspired", so I might just order a replacement unit instead of trying to troubleshoot the power problem with mine.

Cheers!

Mike
