Angry Maytag Wide By Side - Compressor dies after 11 months

I am writing to let others know of a problem I am having.

I purchased the Maytag Wide by Side Model MZD2665HEW because we liked the design of the freezer and the ability to hold wider items. The design has been very helpful but the quality of the product and the customer service I have received has been dissappointing.

After 11 months, the compressor died and I basically lost everything in the freezer and refrigerator. It is under warranty but the service teams are so busy that they are unable to schedule an appointment to make the repair in a responsible time frame.

The details:
I first contacted Maytag Thursday morning. Initially they gave me a Monday appointment to even have someone look at it. I pushed and they worked me in on Friday instead. The service man identified that the compressor was dead and order the part.

The new compressor arrived on Sunday but Maytag does not have a service repair person available until Thursday (four more days). After serveral conversations with Maytag, this is the best they can do and they will not offer any compensation for the loss of food or the difficulties associated of not having a refrigerator.

The local repair shops will not work perform warranty work on a Maytag so I am stuck waiting.

I am thankful that it was under warranty when the problem occured but I am very dissappointed by the quality of service. This is not at all what I expected from Maytag.

Best of luck to anyone needing quick support from the Maytag team. Based on my experience, they are not customer focused.

So in seven days you will have the problem diagnosed, compressor ordered and installed. Sounds like pretty good service to me. Extended warranties, I never bought them. Being in the service industry I have found they are a must. Food loss protection, lemon policy. They are worth it.

Most all the major service warranty companies are not as fast as they used to be.

Even at Sears now, we used to be able to overnight a compressor to customers, but not anymore. It takes at least 7 full days till we at Sears come back to install a compressor.

gmannine is correct in saying its worth it to buy the service contract, it covers $200.00 food loss per year, free rental reimbursement of a refrigerator for that week the compressor is out, and lemon protection.

If you don't have a service contract i advise customers to buy 10-20 pounds of dry ice to keep the refrigerator cold for that week.

Default Thanks for the information

Jake and Gmannine,

thanks for the information. I did not realize that seven days was the norm for a compressor repair. Previous experience was a lot better and I was basing my experience off of that.

As far as the dry ice, I wish I had thought of that. That would have helped a lot.

Do either of you know if compressor problems are normal for Maytag Wide by Wide units? The compressor dying after 11 months concerns me.

Hi pete_nc,

No, thats very uncommon for any maytag to need a compressor so soon, i see more Frigidaire refrigerator compressors go bad in warranty than any other brands.
