    Default Maytag Dryer won't turn

I have a Maytag Legacy Series Model MDG308DAWW; Serial No. 11860593JV natural gas dryer that will not turn. I have read over a lot of the threads on this problem. Let me describe what the dryer is doing. When the start button is first pushed, the dryer, will make a deep humming sound for a few seconds, but the drum will not turn. I have taken off the control panel and all the connections are solid (or appear so). I have also taken off the front panel. I have turned the drum which appears to be no more difficult to push than origianally (although it is not the freest turning dryer drum I have ever tried to turn), and all the rollers that I can see are in good shape and the belt seems to be in the proper position. I have had my partner hold down the button while I attempt to get the drum turning. The drum does not start turning, but a fan motor in the front of the dryer where the lint remover comes to will begin to turn and continue turning. I have checked the thermal switch by jumping it, but I am not absolute sure that is what I was jumping across. I would appreciate any suggestions.

My main problem is that this dryer is just out of warrenty and some of the parts as you know are not cheap. I would like to narrow down the possiblilites as exactly as possible so that I am not paying for a motor when I really need a timer switch or paying for a timer when I really need a motor (it is hard for me to believe a motor should die this quickly.)

If there are any test I need to do I would appreciate being directed through them I have voltmeters galore, so just let me know the proceedure.

If you need more info let me know.

    Thanks
    Jim

Oh one more thing, laundry is mounding up and if I don't get this dryer fixed pretty soon. I am either going to be in big trouble with the family or buried in laundry

    Default Thanks

    Hey Jake,

Thanks for the quick reply. I have a couple of follow up questions. One is this relatively common with this dryer...it is advertised as being heavy duty. Is there anything we can do to reduce the change of the new motor going out as quickly. Seems like a part worth 1/4 the cost of the dryer going out in just a tiny bit over a year is stupid.

    Okay thanks for the info.

    Jim

No, I wouldn't say its common with your model, it can happen on any model at anytime.

How often do you use your dryer, one a day, many times a day?

It would be extremely rare if you used your dryer once or twice a week and the motor went out.

"heavy duty" per say don't mean anything, just a sales pitch the manufactures use to sale dryers.

I've seen motors go out on dryers within a month of being new, but thats under warranty of course, no charge.

They tried to sell you the extended warranty when you bought it? I don't recommend you need them, unless you use the dryer daily or many times a day.

Since you state it is just out of warranty...did you happen to buy it with a credit card that doubles the warranty (up to one year)?

One of the main exclusions to these programs are that 'attachments to real estate' are excluded...but a dryer is usually considered personal property (in real estate contracts), so might be worth a call to the card company. Of course you would have to provide some type of proof about the motor being bad.
