Default Maytag Performa PYE2300AYW Won't Turn

My Performa is not performing well. This set has been non stop trouble. When you press the button to start it makes a humming noise. Sometimes if you hold it down it will drag and then take off. Other times it won't and I assume the motor kicks out to keep it from overheating. I can usually move the drum and once it cools down I can get it to start.

The drum seems hard to spin to me. Once I could only spin it in one direction.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Todd

Hi Todd,

Its likely the motor is bad, but I always first check the blower wheel, I've seen either lint build-up or something get clogged in the blower wheel and cause this as well.

To get access to the inside of your dryer, Unplug your dryer first, then

Jake,

I appreciate the reply. Is it typical for a motor to slowly go out like this? I should have mentioned that I did remove the front and found lint backed up from the fan to the trap. Is this common? I know my wife never runs the dryer without the trap in place. When I put the front back on the fan was turning freely.

Thanks

Todd

Yes

How often do you use your dryer? once a day? many times a day?

Probably an average of once a day.

Yes, over the years lint collects in that duct assembly, I advise people to clean that about once a year.

Yea, I'd say the motor is just worn out if it keeps doing it and the drum turns free both ways with the belt off.

Have you used it today? If so did it run good? or do the same problem?

The dryer is still working. It just needs a little help every now and then.

Ok, sounds good. If it quits completely you can order the motor if you want.
