Default Maytag Quiet Series 300 - drain pump?

Wow, seems like everyone has this washer. Great site here, was happy to pay the $5.

Ok, now what I have going on is a QS300, it heats, it fills, it appears to drain, but it doesn't spray. Model MDBTT79AWS

I disassembled the plastic bits and found everything seemed to be ok at first. There is a bit of a puddle (water level is above the orange flappy drain ring) but I didn't think too much of it, as the water level does go down from the mid-cycle high point and I don't see the puddle with everything in place.

Ran it disassembled for a second with just the chopper blade on the motor spindle and got a good strong vortex of water, so I thought maybe something was just loose. Reassembled everything and still no spray (spray arm doesn't move, motor doesn't have the cycley sound, just a steady hum)

So now I'm wondering, is it a shaft issue not letting the spray impeller work (doesn't seem to be to me, but maybe) or does the little drain pump feed water into the spray impeller? If so maybe it's a weak/dead drain pump (which would also explain the puddle above the orange flap piece when it's finished with a cycle.)

But if it was a totally dead drain pump why does my water level still go down to below the blue plastic bits (just gravity?)

thanks for listening,
Keith

Hi Keith,

So what started this was the motor humming after it filled with water and the motor didn't start, just hummed?

From this parts photo here, what parts did you remove to get the motor to start:

Here's a great service flow chart you can download and print out:

Here's the tech. data sheet on your model too:

The "humming" sounds normal, just without the usually "thrum" of motion to go with it. It just sounds like the motor is running, just not spinning the sprayers.

Issue started with poor cleaning, then I looked and saw that the sprayers were not moving. It's not spraying. So I took off 1 through 7, and ran a quick "rinse only" cycle and saw the chopper blade (8) making a strong vortex in the bottom. But when I put it back together the spray arms still aren't moving, not spraying anything.

When you re-assmplied #6 & #7 did you turn the impeller before you put on #5? to see if the impeller turned freely?

Its likely you'll need a new motor assembly, I've replaced serveral of these in the last few years myself for this same issue.

Here's the motor assembly for your model:

Thanks for the reply. It turned, though it wasn't exactly "free" it didn't take more than my thumb and forefinger to spin it. It did move regularly (ie- it consistently required the same effort, didn't stop and start). So the motor is running, just weakly? I mean, I do see it spinning when all the 1-7 parts are off...

thanks again

Yes, it sounds like the motor is weak, or the motor bearing may be going south.

Ordered from RepairClinic... Their shipping is ASTOUNDINGLY FAST. I called a few spots in town just to make sure the price was right (it was) and they didn't gouge me for overnight shipping (go check FedEx for yourself, their shipping rates look to be just their actual cost for overnight). So I ordered it at around 5:30pm central, and it's already halfway through it's journey now (1am). Will let you know if it fixes everything when I get it installed tomorrow.

Thanks!

Looks like I'll be using this feature. Got it all back together and saw that it was in fact the shaft seal that was making it hard to turn. When I disassembled it the first time I apparently didn't try to turn the motor w/o the seal... it turns free like you said now that I got that seal off of it. So, seal is ordered, motor is on its way back. Will let you know how it goes.

Thanks!

Ok, sounds good Keith, thanks for the update.

Let us know how it goes when you get the seal kit.

Here's the seal kit assembly for your model, in case others need to order it as well:
